Coward's delivery isn't as smooth as he's capable of, or as his character is written, but he still pulls off the mix of charm and turmoil that his character requires. The real winner is the script, though, which mostly feels like a dry comedy bathed in slightly cynical darkness, it's risky mix, but for the first two thirds of the film it pulls it off magnificently. Then it begins to falter, and leads towards an ok ending thatdoesn't really satisfy me and changes the tone of the film.

Nobody is better suited to delivering barbed witticisms that the great Noel Coward, and Hecht and MacArthur's fine script provides him with ample opportunity to insult and belittle all around him to great comic effect. The film changes tone drastically when his selfish, acid-tongued publisher dies and is denied entry to heaven, but thankfully its moral message is uplifting rather than sickly.

Intellectuals join forces to make a Hollywood movie. A unique treat. Not so incredible for it's visual attributes. No, this is driven by the words. So rude, so obnoxious, so cold delivered by the legendary play writer Noel Coward! Such wit!
