The Screaming Skull

Kinda like if Ed Wood remade "Rebecca", though not as gloriously awful as that sounds.

A long time ago, I went to a small store where no one spoke English, everything was less than a dollar and nothing was a name-brand. As a kid, I sampled countless types of candy with indecipherable labels and had plenty of change to spare. I once bought this big box with Japanese writing and cartoon mice and critters eating pink candy on it. It tasted good so I ate it ... until my stomach hurt really bad. I guess my point is that getting a stomach pump was much more fun than watching this movie.

Variation on "Rebecca" doesn't really impress but has some nice music. The wife character is maybe a little more modernly written than she might have been and the Torgo-esque gardener character being played by the director also is sort of cool.

It takes forever to go anywhere. Then a skull screams several times and it's kinda funny watching it attack people. Then it ends. That's about it.

There is an actual screaming skull in this, so technically it delivers on its title- which is more than can be said for plenty of B movies. Problem is, said skull is neither as cool nor as menacing as the one on the poster. The plot is plodding & littered with genre cliches like the woman with a tragic past, troubled gardener & greedy husband. The effects are pretty standard for the time. There's a good story in here somewhere, but it's never fully realized. It is short, though, which is nice.

Takes a long time to get going, but hilariously campy scenes like the husband being "attacked" by the skull are worth it.
