Raises some interesting questions about life and death, and recognizes that there are no pat answers. Feels like a bit like a made-for-TV movie though, or maybe a step up, like a made-for-cable movie. Not that there's anything wrong with it -- the performances are good, and there's some flair to it, it just doesn't feel like something you'd go see in a theater.

Very well done. Bardems performance is very precise and emotionally moving. The scenes where he's flying will leave you awestruck.

This movie made me cry. A lot. And I never, never cry at movies (I loathe sentimentality). Beautiful and poignant without being maudlin. Javier Bardem is incredible.

Javier Bardem is brilliant as a man who has wanted to die for 30 years. A touching true story.

Too maudlin, but my eyes were considerably more glazed than going in. While Diving Bell somewhat supersedes, I'd imagine you'd have to be pretty hard-hearted to regret watching this. Nice mix of trad and opera in the soundtrack, too.

This movie started strongly (wonderful acting by Javier Bardem; very striking things peppered throughout), but the sudden switch to schmaltzy "emotional moment" fare was baffling. These scenes were thankfully few and far between, but the artistic devices they used were such perfect cliches, they felt like they belonged more in a soap opera or perfume ad than anything meaning to be poignant.

Not very satisfying, really. And this on the heels of a certain prominent American film that was also about euthanasia (avoiding spoilers here)

A school example how a powerfully strong actor could show his skills by acting only with his face: the leading character is paralized from neck bellow. All actors are very professional and story touchingly successful. This is also an interesting storyline how a good-hearted man beyond fysical sex can attract variety of women; here is actually three different kind of.

Critics are hailing Alejandro Amenabars portrait of a man who chooses to die as Oscar-worthy, powerful and life-affirming, in its way. However, some have called it melodramatic and manipulative.

Amenabar is extraordinarily delicate in his approach, which leads to a few moments of almost startling beauty, particularly as he allows for visualization of Sampedro's imagined wanderings. It also means that the film, though smart and elegant, feels a little too distant. Euthanasia is a major issue, especially in country like Spain which is dominated by a culture shaped by Catholicism. What should be a gripping intellectual debate becomes mere background.

It's a bit more obvious with its heartstring-tugging than the sort-of-comparable Diving Bell or Barbarian Invasions, making this one a bit less powerful. Still, the end result is a moving and morally interesting drama that even got a few tears out of this heartless robot.

The live: is it an obligation or a right? Whichever side of the euthanasia issue you stand on, you are sure to sympathize with Ramon Sampedro, a quadriplegic for 28 years, one way or another. Javier Bardem gives a very subtle and real performance as Ramon.

An engaging, tender, beautifully shot and mostly cliché-free drama, bolstered by a poignant performance by Javier Bardem. Although I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was watching a well-made TV movie, the film still had quite a strong emotional impact.

Yet another masterful acting performance from Javier Bardem. In fact, the whole cast, in particular Lola Duenas as Rosa, delivers truly moving and memorable performance. As for the movie, it deals with one of the core moral dilemmas i.e. the right to die, and provides balanced arguments from both sides (through Sampedro's own perspective on his fight for euthanasia, but also the hundreds of reasons he had to keep on living despite his condition through the love showed by those surrounding him.

this is a pretty good movie on a very touchy topic. It was worth a watch and damned well made. It's not going to change anybody's mind about the concept, but in the end Sampedro didn't really change anybody's mind either.

Nothing special. They didn't dig any deeper in how a person could become in this situation , it is a simple disability story, simple scenes, over sentimental. Primitive scenes about little cute and beautiful things in life are all over the place, any women liking this man, publishing a book for a great man, very ridiculously made religious argument between Ramon and father, makes it very boring, God know how many times I unconsiously stopped it from being played :D.

Disappointingly one-note and superficial consideration of the pro and con arguments for euthanasia promises philosophical fireworks, but instead develops along standard and conventional "disease of the week" tropes, which still could have produced more satisfying results if Bardem's Ramon wasn't such a baffling enigma. Paradoxically it is Bardem's performance which is the highlight here - he is never less than magnetic even as his character slips from the film's (and Amenábar's) grasp.

Yes, maybe at end of 20th century euthanasia was a subject for a fight and make movies. Nowadays just go and get covid-shot and thats it. Although the subject of this movie is not significant, it's still enjoyable to watch how Amenabar has put everything together. Emotional peace of art.
