I found the Renaissance shorts to be the best offered in the Animatrix.

I remember when I saw this for the first time, I was instantly intrigued and in the months after, it was because of second renaissance part 1 and 2 that I started reading about the Matrix universe and everything a world like this implied. Though I enjoyed the Matrix sequels as well, it saddens me that they delve deeper into the stories that the Animatrix told.

The dark style in this is what I was expecting from the sequels. The second best (and only other worthwhile) thing to come out of the Matrix universe.

An improvement on the first one. Although the story seems silly (blocking out the sky?), the way it's shown in this short only adds to the apocalyptic feeling, and feeling is something the first one didn't have much of.

This is the segment that made Animatrix worth watching.

This is the highlight of the Animatrix. As others have said, this is what the sequels should have been like. There isn't a serious amount of depth, but it gives such a wonderful backstory to how everything came to be. It's in many respects I, robot inspired, with some other elements of science fiction. The animation style is wonderful.

I suppose it can be said that the animation is good. It’s hard not to feel that the reason these are popular (or seem to be) is partly because there are no characters, and therefore the filmmakers avoid the seemingly otherwise unavoidable problem of terrible characterisation that afflicts almost all animated movies of this kind.

A little better than Part I. However, it rubs our noses in one of the flaws of the whole Matrix mythos: how stupid the whole "humans as sources of power" scenario really is. Why don't the machines have a matrix of whales, which would never be able to make trouble? Why don't they have individual matrices for individual humans, instead of having them all in one big cage where they can commune and form nuclei of revolt? Why don't they just burn whatever they're feeding the humans? Etc.

These older Matrix shorts are starting to look a lot better now that the 4th film has come out to show us how a bad Matrix looks like.

Not as interesting as part one. Mostly because of the extended fight scene and oversimplified story.

Well-watchable like its Part 1, but also limited by making its humans half-arsed avatars for total inept stupidity. Blocking out the sun? Really? The art was interesting, but nothing remarkable.

Did the Animatrix really need to be broken up into all ten(?) segments?

This and Part 1 are the best parts of the Animatrix for sure. They stand now as a depressing reminder of what could've been.
