This could've ended up being a frivolous and forgettable piece of work yet Campanella displays excellent storytelling skills and the characters are expertly portrayed. I'm usually fond of investigation thrillers and I also liked how Campenella didn't shy away from comedy every once in a while. A great film; With "A Prophet", "The White Ribbon" and now this, 2009 proved to be a great year for foreign films. Recommended.

I judged this film even before I saw it mostly due to my disappointment over A Prophet not winning the Best Foreign Film category. But when I saw it, I admit I was blown away. What I expected to be an ordinary, crowd-pleasing, melodramatic thriller turned out to be a complex, richly-layered, and unconventional narrative that does not only focus on the crime and the mystery but also on how it changes the lives of the people involved forever. A heartbreaking, character-driven film.

Excellent. A rare feast that has all the right ingredients. This film successfully blends such a multitude of themes and emotions.. duty, decency, hate, revenge, friendship, unrequited love. Beautiful cinematography, amazing performances, flawless direction and production, an awe inspiring cinematic accomplishment. Very highly recommended.

a decent story is accompanied by some very competent acting by all cast members, although the main plot is somewhat hampered by the so-so romantic subplot. The dialogues were very well written, with some nice comedic touches, but the real highlight of the movie is a totally unexpected chase scene, an unbelievable technical achievement. Maybe Campanella should get into action flicks?

Good actors keep the so-so plot above water. The exhilarating execution in the stadium sequence aside, this was a disappointingly average thriller which I wouldn't mention in the same breath as 'Un prophete' and certainly not together with 'The White Ribbon', Hanekes superb Golden Palm-winner which was snubbed at the Oscars. That this isn't in the same league is no crime, however, and it's perfectly watchable. Good, even, albeit somewhat overhyped.

After watching "A Prophet" I was surprised it never won the best foreign film category and that this movie had won it. This prompted me to watch this movie. In my opinion "A Prophet" should have won it. With these thoughts apart this movie is still worthy of the best picture award. Its an amazing thriller which has deep story which holds on to you all through out. Amazing cinematography and strong storyline. A must see movie which will keep you engrossed.

Solid thriller that manages to be both tense and melancholy. I didn't care as much for the romantic strand, but the examination of the crime and its consequences was at times fascinating and thrilling - the soccer stadium sequence and the resolution were particularly powerful.

Sublime and spellbinding, this superb romantic thriller from Argentina really gets under your skin. "El secreto de sus ojos" is top-notch entertainment -the mystery is engrossing, the love story is beautiful, the performances are nunanced, the script is subtle and the direction mesmerizing. Unpredictable and surprising until the final moments, it is a welcome departure from the recycled norms of American pseudo-thrillers and, simultaniously, utterly exhilarting and accesible. A small marvel.

This rather messy mish mash of plots is made watchable by the witty and sharp dialogue and gentle comedy which, while it makes you laugh, undermines the extremely dark nature of the main plot, however. This darkness never seems to resolve with the romantic subplot and the final product is a lot less than it promises.

A quality cast and nice direction, cinematography, music etc. It's just that the story is your basic standard fare detectivey type stuff, and with quite a lot of silly coincidences thrown in. None of the characters are really interesting or memorable, and their jumping between time periods confused me a little. It's a slow burner and reserves the best stuff for the end, but all in all it feels like a film I have seen countless times before in US, French and Asian cinema. Solid but unremarkable.

The mystery-thriller suit it's wearing is admittedly rather conventional and not particularly memorable, but thankfully that's just the first layer of a rich, compelling character drama. It's wonderfully-acted and elegantly-shot, with one hell of a single-take scene set in a soccer stadium. I still think A Prophet should have won Best Foreign Language Film though.

Competent but not exceptional crime thriller/drama. It felt very familiar, and things were clearly meant to be surprises just weren't that surprising. The melancholy air and touching on larger themes was nice, but again I felt kinda been-there-done-that about it. Still, originality isn't everything... it's a very watchable movie with some good performances and a couple of interesting touches. Ricardo Darín has sort of a Joe Mantegna charm to him.

Silent and patient drama with interesting characters. It's not a big and twisted plot which makes "In their eyes" absolutely stunning. Rich, haunting and elegiac story is a mix of genre elements that really shouldn't combine this well - a love story stretching across generations, with an accompanying brutal man-hunt as well as a searing study of the corrosive nature of the obsessive man-hunt and what little it can ultimately get you – that the finale is arguably anti-climactic may well be the point here, with Darín's ultimate life-long quest amounting to an irreconcilable case of shattered and destroyed lives.

Rewatched on January 21, 2022. One of the most beautifully shot movies. Story has its flaws(SPOILER: solving the case by looking at some photos, kidnapping a man and holding him in “prison” for 25 years without anyone noticing), but without those flaws, this movie wouldn’t exist. Story and characters have depth, both murder and love stories are interesting and connected. Famous stadium scene, elevator scene, and train scene… Hats off to Campanella.

Given how painfully unrealistic and horribly formulaic and cliche-ridden most hollywood crime films are, I really shouldn't have been so surprised to find out that one of the best crime films pf this past decade ended up being a Spanish film, a suberply acted, written and directed one at that. Sure, it has a dragging romance supblot, but otherwise it's intelligent, thrilling and thought-provoking. What else can I ask for?

Meh. A messy and - excusing the interesting (if admittedly nowhere near as surprising as it thinks it is) ending - bland suspense film. Also the attempt to mix light comedy with this dark, dark plot irked me, and the way the investigation was carried out felt kinda lulz-worthy. It's competently made, and quite watchable, but I can't say I was ever even half as impressed as some people were.

Excellent drama. Very good characterizations, dialogs, aging make-up. Some of the best close up shots I have seen (especially of the eyes), good framing of the scenes.. make it a visual treat. Two love stories intertwined with each other, take us through an emotional/moral ride. One of the very few films that makes it worth the long time.. that it takes to take us through the story. An interesting take on the detective thriller - it's a little bit of everything. Taking out the romance would soften the gravity of the suckerpunch (doppelganger) ending; removing the levity would kill the minute care taken in building our investment; leaving out the horror would destroy the tension. All the elements blend in to a particularly arresting cohesion. The entirety of the stadium scene deserved the Oscar alone. It's up there with Hitch in an orchestra, or Kurosawa playing Baseball.

Desires, thoughts, obsessions, lurking beyond the grasp of our investigations, become visible in others only when we are able admit to ourselves our own (or vice versa). Ugh. Slow, elegant and artistic film. Campanella's handling of themes like justice and revenge reminded me of the Vengeance trilogy by Park Chan-wook. Director seems to enjoy teasing and confusing viewers, luckily the climax works and everything wraps up nicely. There are some flows too, like the lack of focus and weak romantic subplot.
