The plot of Barnes' novella is well fleshed out but this cries out for a better leading man than Broadbent. It's hard not to wish Tom Courtenay had reprised his combination with Rampling from 45 Years, a film with which this shares some themes, albeit not to the same degree as The Remains of the Day.

Slow moving, thought provoking added another dimension to the book which is brilliant.

The Sense of an Ending is a mixed bag in both direction and narrative. Rampling and Broadbent are great, and their scenes are what kept me invested in the plot and curious about the contents of the diary. The constant back and forth between the main character's youth often serves a purpose, but a lot of the short flashes seem like a cheap trick to garner attention, and the scenes themselves are often banal. The ultimate resolution is both dissatisfying and fitting.

Mysterious but could be more fulfilling and certainly is a bit dour. The main character is not very likeable. But perhaps that’s part of the point.
