Tom Ewell's character is one of the creepiest, most misogynistic, lecherous assholes I've ever seen in a film, and I found this disturbing to watch insofar as it wanted me to identify with him. This film portrays women as sexual objects to be exploited (it's no accident that Marilyn's character is left nameless) and men as carnal machines who are biologically programmed to obsessively lust after them. A film for men who love to hate women.

I was expecting more from this. The writing lacks subtlety, and the main character's constant self-addressing monologues are a device better suited to stage than screen I think. Tom Ewell's performance leaves something to be desired, and Monroe's dumb blonde is just annoying. It's not completely devoid of merit, however. It deals with some very risque material, allowing Wilder to push the envelope as he typically did. There are a few very funny moments, particularly the fantasy sequences.

This has aged badly. It's a relic. There's nothing wrong with the premise, but far from being funny or romantic, the protagonists repulsed me, yes, Monroe too, but the blabbermouth asshole that is Ewell's character is so obnoxious I could barely stand looking at him. That said, it has its moments.

An everparanoid man suffering from the seven year itch - the urge to be unfaithful after seven years of marriage just waved his wive and kids goodbye for the summer and has to resist all kinds of temptations. Sounds ok and it was ok, but nothing extraordinary. Ewell performance was quite good but i thought Monroe wasn't that good, dumb and fake comes to mind, maybe deliberate.. but wasn't done very well. She was better in Some like it hot. Decent film probably best known for the skirt-scene.

This certainly hasn't aged well. Marilyn Monroe is certainly a stunner and they make her look great, and this is the film with one of the most iconic cinema images in history, but the film lacks real direction and it doesn't end up doing much. The plot is so simple and it tries to play to its charms and fun but to me, it's just a little irritating and annoying. Not terrible but it is not a film for this generation.

Never liked this much. Tom Ewell is just a little too sleazy and threadbare to make me care.

It’s painfully obvious that this is a stage adaptation due to the lead’s incessant yammering to himself, and one would expect a legendary screenwriter like Wilder to facilitate a more elegant transmission of the character’s thoughts to the audience. The conceit works poorly and largely nullifies the best efforts of Ewell and Monroe, and scenes tend to drag. The film’s message seems to be one of fidelity but the needle of its moral compass dances fairly wildly throughout.

It's a fun little movie. The main character's constant monologues got a little irritating, however, I thought. The film also contains one of the most iconic images in cinema history - Monroe's dress being blown up and her holding it down. Despite how famous the moment is, it's really underplayed in the actual film. It happens twice, but only for a few seconds.

It's hard to watch this 60 years out of context. It's a great time piece capturing racism, sexism, cultural norms, and so forth. Execution was good for the time, if anything it's a great example of everything film was in the 50s. But it isn't timeless, the characters aren't necessarily likable or relatable anymore, leaving new audiences without any care for what's happening on screen.

Marilyn Monroe usually sparkles and has great characters even when they are the typical "dumb blonde". This movie did not deliver that. It is more focused on the male lead and his struggles with a "middle-life crisis". For me, there is too much fancy and not enough content. Also, if I never hear Marilyn say delicate again, that will be wonderful. The dialogue was repetitive and mundane.

Ridiculous though may of the aspects may be, including the fact that a majority of the film is Ewell delivering fantastical monologues, it still manages to be extremely funny. Wilder's wit shines through and he also includes some really wonderful visual accompaniment that enhances a lot of the jokes. Monroe's character is simple but it's something she does exceptionally well.

I spent the majority of this film thinking to myself "this guy would have been so much happier if he had never got married." So when he runs off with the paddle to see his wife at the end, I was thinking "isn't that sad." I don't think that was the intended emotional impact. The bad monologues and the hammy acting would also bring me out of the film fairly regularly. I did laugh out loud a few times though, which is worth something, but this film is over-rated as hell.

All anyone seems to talk about when they talk about Marilyn Monroe is Marilyn Monroe the sex symbol, so it's easy to forget what an excellent comedienne she was. Good thing, because that's all this picture has going for it. It was QUITE obviously originally a play, and not nearly enough was done to modify it for the screen.

Even though the film was heavily censored and Billy Wilder himself considers it his worse and even disowns it, it still remains pretty damn good for being his worst film. It's a far cry from perfection with it being pretty repetitive, especially with the soliloquies. It's light entertainment.

Billy Wilder has never disappointed me...until now. The main character just sits around talking to himself about the most uninteresting, boring shit I've ever heard. It's really hard to watch. Monroe gives it some life but this should've been a play or just never made. Honestly, I couldn't even make it to the end.

I think there's a way to read this movie where you see Tom Ewell as the epitomy of toxic male sexuality and that way it doesn't play quite as horribly from a feminist point of view. But you have to work to get there. My problem is I can't help but love so much of the rest of it; the charm, the dialogue, the fantasies, THE MARILYN.

It accomplishes something very difficult in film: A successful, effective translation from stage to screen, while still retaining the overall effect of the stage. The monologues may seem weird, but they work. A fine film with something to say that's still totally relevant to relationships today, if not more than it was in the Fifties.

What's considered funny & beautiful changes over time but this is still funnier than most modern comedies & Monroe is as flat-out stunning & tempting as any modern day beauty. Wilder pulls off a nice hat trick here b/c the men in the audience - w/ imaginations as feverish as Ewell's - would like 2 c his average joe husband walk off w/ Monroe, but at the same time they know he shouldn't. Wilder & the writer manage 2 bring those 2 conflicting impulses 2 gether in2 a thoroughly satisfying ending.

2. Marilyn's innocent and naive character fits perfectly within the overarching atmosphere and tone of the film, as opposed to in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, where her character felt forcefully placed and exploited. The Itch is a thoroughly entertaining film, a true comedy of a bygone Hollywood era. Tom Ewell's performance is top notch, with his fantasies running wild and internalised dialogues being the glue that makes each scene transition smoothly and elegantly, flowing with unexpected ease.

The monologuing gets to be a bit much, though it can be pretty funny at times. Ewell and Monroe deliver entertaining performances, even if the characters are kind of annoying as people.

I loved all the daydreaming sequences. Monroe's character was too oblivious in the beginning. Ewell's body movements were just as comedic as his dialogue. Fav scene: talking with his boss.

Why are the characters so damn annoying? I might forgive the poor attempts at gender commentary and main character constantly speaking his thoughts out loud if everyone was at least funny, but there's only like three jokes in the entire thing so oh well.

I am disappointed in Wilder, for the first time. Even though his great writing ability makes my time watching the movie somewhat worthwhile, the story is terrible. What was Wilder trying to tell with this story? I guess nothing, just producing something to cater to the lust of the masses. He tried to make the movie better with his perfect lines but when your aim of telling the story is rotten to the core, you can't make it a good one even if you are Wilder. He made it watchable, to kill time.

Tom Ewell walks around and talks to himself for most of the film and he's generally stuffy and unfunny, like having Alan from Two and a Half Men chase after Marilyn Monroe. Luckily, Marilyn is generally a joy to watch. I just really don't know what to think of this film as a whole. Sometimes its funny and others its repulsive.

The protagonist is the most misogynist, creepy assholes I've ever seen in a film, and I'd straight-up feel repulsed by anyone who thought he was funny or identifiable. Ewell, is a bad actor and the constant monologue-ing just doesn't work. Monroe is a little more tolerable but not by much, dissappointing too, since this is the only Monroe film I've seen after her good role in Some Like it Hot.

A shockingly bad film. There isn't a single laugh in this mess of a comedy as we follow around a repulsive, slimy moron of a character for one hundred painfully long minutes. In some films I really like Wilder's cynicism, but here he isn't so much cynical as misanthropic with his presentation of both men and women being insulting.

Charming, simple and elegant movie - imaginative, acted out well - worth a watch. Why don't they make movies like this anymore. I think, with this & 'The Apartment' Billy Wilder might become one of my favorite directors. I didn't know it was Marilyn Monroe until 3/4th of the movie :) Perfect embodiment of a stereotype adult male's stereotypical fantasy: child-like innocence in a fully grown voluptuous body. Isn't that what our simple minds want at some level/time? Is that why she became iconic?

Billy Wilder was hampered by the Hayes Code (in the play version, the two have sex), which caused Wilder to disown this film. I disagree with Wilder (can I do that?). It is still a funny film, about a man trying to maintain both his id and superego, while his dream woman lives upstairs. Tom Ewell and Monroe are perfectly cast.

This is certainly bright, sexy and fun, but it's definitely not Billy Wilder at his most inspired -- and maybe there's too much interference among the most important scenes. Yet, it's pleasant to watch Tom Ewell's paranoid monologues and to check Marilyn Monroe's captivating perfomance and stunning beauty.

"The Seven Year Itch" captures the outlook of the 1950s American man through a series of monologues featuring Marilyn Monroe as the quintessential dream girl. The film, crafted with quality, reflects the era's attitudes about men and their relationships.

It's almost like Wilder trying to do a Tashlin film and it really, really doesn't work. Neither compellingly wacky nor affectionate toward it's characters, in fact Ewell is pretty much repellent (though this may have been Wilder's intention, in which case the film is just deeply misanthropic), and Monroe's character is almost offensively one-dimensional. It's odd to consider how progressive The Apartment would be just five years later when this is so backwards in every way.

ewell does a great job acting, but his character is written as a disgusting, deranged lunatic. there are flashes of humor, and i did laugh, but for the most part i was disturbed by ewell's unhinged character who seemed just as likely to murder monroe's character as try to bed her. and monroe can't act period so there's no charm to find there even if her character had been written as a human being.
