Almost elegiac in tone, Saura relates a real incident--easily found on the internet (and he sticks closely to the facts)--without sensationalism (what I was afraid of when I read the synopsis). It's beautifully done, from the cinematography to the very effective use of flamenco and folk song (it's also at least the 4th movie of his to use Ravel's La Valse). The grunting and squealing of pigs while the young lovers go at it is inspired, and Victoria Abril's histrionics are fairly amusing.
