The Shallows might just be the second best killer shark movie of all time, which admittedly says more about the quality of its competition than it, but is an accomplishment worth celebrating nonetheless. It's a slight but mostly effective thriller about a woman trying to survive a shark attack while stranded on a rock. Blake Lively brings it, the shark's fun, the movie's thrilling, and Steven Seagull needs approximately 30 sequels.

Decent camera work. A lean script, for the most part (which is a compliment). Lively's backstory is as phoned in as Bullock's in Gravity (it's nearly identical thematically actually, if you substitute a daughter for a mother in this instance). I just don't see how this contributes anything new to the survival-horror genre. Also, the final scene of this movie is a strong contender for worst scene of the year.

I had a great theater experience with a very involved crowd so had I watched this alone in a dark room I'm not sure my reaction would have been as positive. The campiness is on point; Nancy gets beaten up pretty bad, her situation gets more and more extreme as things progress (to the point of ridiculousness), the gore can get pretty nasty, and the shark is a hilarious asshole. The family backstory is phoned in bullshit, but it's a fun time.

Blake Lively was stunningly beautiful and her acting was superb. The action was quite good, however, the plot with a shark seeking vengeance was incredibly stupid, and the way it died was so pathetic that it ruins what would otherwise be a decent horror movie. Beautiful location and good production quality and music. Worth watching but with a severely flawed premise written by a nitwit and produced by morons. It would have been so easy to fix the obvious flaws with just a little more realism.

Begins boringly enough, with a lot of references to modern culture like video-chat and club music, despite being set on a very remote Mexican beach miles away from all that (way to set the mood). Once the shark makes its appearance, I found myself slowly engaged in this rather medically-minded survival film (of the horror kind) that gradually snowballs its visceral effect. The jump-scares are fun, though the mood of dread is low, but it's an effective thriller more than a horror.

I think there's a lot that this movie does rather well. It nails the atmosphere and the dread. Blake definitely looks the part, but I'm starting to get the feeling that she's a mediocre actress. There's some emotional content there but a lot of it is just tossed at you without much of any thoughtfulness. Sadly I felt the movie gives in to ridiculousness, and many scenes with the shark itself devolve from intimidating tension, to just silliness. But Steven Seagull gives a powerhouse performance.

I honestly loved this movie and it will probably go down as one of my personal favorites of 2016. It's visually beautiful, it's tense, it's got some surprisingly unique moments (including some very memorable use of music), and Blake Lively is really good in it. I give it a very strong recommendation to anybody who likes shark/monster movies. (And yes, it's worth seeing in the theaters - the cinematography is stunning.)

The Shallows enters the Shark thriller waters aiming to be taken more seriously than many of it's peers. It also follows the Jaws approach of hiding the shark for most of the runtime, with the first 45 mins working fairly well as visually glossy survival thriller. However the tone changes completely in the final act, and so The Shallows ends up falling between the rock of realism and the hard place of popcorn entertainment, never managing to successfully climb on to either for safety.

As shallow as the title suggests. So many things in this film don't make sense... And I'm okay with nonsensical creature flicks, but when a movie aspires to be a somewhat serious survival drama the lack of logic becomes a problem. Annoying.

Yes, it's mostly a one-woman Jaws re-enactment with so-so CGI, but it knows its strengths. It keeps the shark offscreen often enough, milks every ounce of its setup, building tension and not releasing it, and the fact that it's a shark movie that takes itself seriously after all the crap ones we've gotten recently makes me like it more than I probably would otherwise. Docking a couple of points for the awful closing shot, though.

Yes, the shark is of the ridiculously determined Jaws 4 type, but if you can suspend your disbelief this is easily one of the most riveting and exciting man vs nature thrillers you're likely to see. The fact that so much of it takes place on one outcropping of rock is a testament to Lively's performance & the filmmakers' extraordinary skills. A great surprise.

A very entertaining film, in fact, and not exclusively so because of Blake Lively's energetic performance, or her other visually appealing features. Not the least actually. The plot progresses into a primal, simple, but well executed game of survival between an alpha predator and a protagonist that the viewer can easily root for. The film lacks exceptional dramatic qualities, but then again it doesn't annoy either - a great past time activity.

The Shallows had strong moments and I thought its justification for its exposition was well done, but honestly, it was my suspension of disbelief that ruined this movie for me. While films like Jaws are also simply false, this one kept up too much of a facade in its attempt to look true. It's not as good as it wants you to believe, but it's not every year's shitty shark movie either.

The Shallows is a tense shark-as-force-of-nature thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Blake Lively's character Nancy is extremely likable and you can't help rooting for her as she attempts to escape the marauding Great White. This movie does what's expected of it and more.

In terms of its clear objectives of (a) gratuitous Blake Lively bikini scenes; and (b) sustaining shark-based tension for 90 minutes, the movie succeeds on point (a) and scrapes a passing grade on point (b). Collet-Serra uses every visual, sfx or camera trick imaginable to keep things dynamic, but ostensibly because the material desperately needs that treatment. Staying on a rock for 3 days is not a great ride. I'll admit I did cheer loudly when the shark got his way with a minor character!

Juvenile, boring, purposely predictable, and done before. The only reason I kept me watching was the overwhelming feeling of sadness that took over me whenever I saw Blake Lively and realized she will never be mine. The coolest scene was with the jellyfish. Make the whole story that intellectual, suspenseful, beautiful and dangerous then you will have a good movie in this genre.

Well, what started out as a taut, gripping, realistic drama gets progressively more ludicrous as the director throws everything except the kitchen sink at our heroine. It got so ridiculous that I quite expected Lively to surf back to the beach on the back of a dolphin, but instead, the sea level suddenly rose to 150 feet, allowing our heroine to outswim the bad guy, until it crashed into the seabed like a Vauxhall Astra hitting a brick wall at 70mph. Shame, because it started so promisingly.

That said, The Shallows is perpetually, painfully traumatic once the shark surfaces. We see several people viciously mauled by a razor-toothed beast. Blood repeatedly colors the foaming water. And as the put-upon protagonist is bashed, bloodied, stung, ripped and then attempts to suture together gory chunks of her own torn flesh, we can't help but wince at her painful plight while she repeatedly musters her determination to survive (pluggedin.com)

The Shallows isn't exactly a film to write home about. While it does look stunning and Blake Lively plays her character well, the film tries to be suspenseful and it kinda fails. I was never really on the edge of my seat, I didn't get that "the shark is right behind you feel" I think I should. Other people might experience this differently, but it just didn't have the right effect on me. It's an okay film as a whole, but nothing above avarage.

Who doesn't want to see a hot blonde in a bikini get attacked by a great white shark? That kind of crass Hollywood thinking is all you need to spawn a summer throwaway like The Shallows; it's one of those movie titles that serves as its own review. But while this nailbiter sure as hell ain't swimming in the same classic waters as Jaws, it gets the jolting job done.

Oh boy this certainly did start out with a promising setup despite being a cliche "finding onself" girl power story. A big giant CGI shark shows up and starts ruining her "totally rad vay-cay." That's all well and good but the shark looked and behaved so ridiculous in this that it killed any sense of realism. If certain scenes were reworked I could see this as being elevated into a new classic instead of your standard woman vs cgi thing vs self film.

I usually associate shark movies with trashy horror comedy. Ever since the well loved, but rather silly "Jaws", you don't often see realism in that subgenre. "The Shallows" belongs to the handful that make at least some effort. At its most successful, it is a nail-bitingly tense thriller. Unfortunately, its inane depiction of the tide, and a ludicrous final act conspire to bring it down. Australia's "The Reef" was perhaps slightly better.

Anyone who's seen the trailer will know exactly what they're getting out of this one, and mercifully the makers don't try to overstretch the paper-thin premise. So, if you can ignore the predictability, iffy CGI, crummy climax and the fact the shark is some laughably oversized psycho-fish straight out of Deep Blue Sea, it's got just enough suspense and pretty cinematography to keep you entertained on an undemanding Saturday night.

Simple premises in The Shallows (2016). Get back to the beach without being eaten by the shark. And Jaume Collet-Serra does well with it in all it's simplicity. I'm not going to claim I loved this, but it's digestible shark horror that doesn't get on your nerves the same way a lot of the other low budget shark horrors out there.

The shark in this movie acted like a villain in a slasher movie. At first it was entertaining, but as the movie progressed, it became goofy and seemed more like a Sharknado sequel. This is the first movie I saw on my new projector, and the excitement for that wasn't enough to make me like this movie. Blake Lively was likeable, but her character was not. All of her choices were born from logic, but they were still poor choices. The go-pro camera retrieval toward the end of the movie was contrived

Sufficiently thrilling. I squirmed when I was supposed to, tensed up when intended, and even gasped once or twice. A nice, economically told survival story. For a shark film; it's pretty good. Blake Lively is good to look at, but more than that it has genuine tension and it at least made me squirm in my seat. They build the sense of dread pretty well, only giving you glimpses of the shark at first until the inevitable survival battle begins. The family subplot is nice but forgettable, and felt that the CGI was hit and miss (shark = good, Blake's face whilst surfing = not).

Viewed January 4, 2017. There's a great moment about halfway through this movie where, hours after the shark's attack, Blake Lively removes a tourniquet she's tied around her thigh and tries to restore feeling through her leg. Her foot falls halfheartedly to the ground, completely dead. It's a remarkably tactile gesture - I could feel that specific, numb pain shoot through me - in a movie full of painfully realized injuries.
