Has definitely suffered from overexposure (it's probably playing on at least three cable channels right this second), but this is still absolutely one of the best movies of all time. Like an engrossing novel, it sucks you in with richly-drawn characters and resonant themes, leaving you stunned and elated when it's over. A masterpiece.

A true exercise in the form. You know it's a good movie when what you just saw should feel hokey, but it doesn't. (some of the narration, read on paper, is questionable. 'No good thing ever dies?' What?) Maybe that's manipulation, but so be it. I'll just call it movie magic. Frank Darabont had the perfect storm of people surrounding him (Newman, Deakins, King.) TNT could run this shit bi-daily and I wouldn't care.

As close to perfection as you could ever care to be. On subsequent viewings I have attempted to find something to dislike about the film, but have been unsuccessful simply because it has been so well made any faults pale into relative insignificance. A masterclass for everything: The feel-good story is perfect as an audience member or for a writer looking to study it. The performances are inspiring & technically amazing. The flawless editing helps you understand the passage of time. The music is wonderfully composed and executed, and works as a sort of lyric-less gospel, helping you get through the tough times. And the imagery is awesome, with so many frames that can be a painting. Perfect, and quite easily the greatest movie ever made.

The powerful feeling of literary and poetic greatness that flows through your mind while watching this movie is truly indescribable. Darabont shines with this remarkable film; unprecedented in its elaborate mixture of magnificent acting, subtle, but solid cinematography, and moving, melodious tones that gracefully swell beneath an enchanting tale of Andy Dufresne. Freeman's narration will send chills down your spine as Robbins' performance brings tears to your eyes. Absolutely phenomenal.

Cleverly constructed but overly mechanical prison fairytale. Composes the themes of hope and fear, as well as of gifts and promises, and, of course, justice and redemption. Some of this is not entirely without interest, but the controlling (yet detached) hand of the author is too clearly present throughout. In short, it tends to reduce its audience to the condition of being a herd to be led.

It's a collection of cliches, to be sure, but it never feels overly cliched because it's all so well-done. The leads turn in some fine performances, and the story is engaging and well-paced. Beyond that, it's just plain heartwarming.

It is said that Netflix had a bunch of people try to come up with the best way to accumulate people's rankings to improve recommendations. No matter how many times this movie comes on cable, you can't help but watch it every time. It's one of the great ones, with a legendary script and flawless direction. Over-exposure has hurt it's reputation some, but that's only because basically everyone has seen it. Some will criticize the ending, but every now and then we need a beautifully told story of triumph and redemption.

I have my favorite movies, but this may be, without a doubt, one of the best movies ever made, and I'm not putting that lightly. Everything is just near-perfect to me. Deakins' pretty cinematography, Newman's pivotal score, Darabont's soft direction and mighty writing, and the the well-casted actors. Stretching a short story to 142 minutes? This could have been awful, but it was everything but. Very well paced and handles with care. Definitely, DEFINITELY give it a try.

Can't believe I haven't watched it until now. It was mostly due to the long runtime. The problem with watching great popular movies after everyone else is that it spawns imitators and parodies that clouds my judgment of the original. Even the damn poster gave away the ending. Anyway, great characters, great pacing, a bit too much torture porn for me, and the ultimate escape is improbable (nobody looked behind the giant poster?). Morgan Freeman can narrate anything. Fav scene: rain escape.

Simply a fantastic movie .. the ultimate narration by Freeman, the ultimate enigma in Robbins and around three scenes that every time I watch this CLASSIC film has me in tears. The only reason for a less that 100 score is the ending, which is too drawn out, too "hollywood", and the original ending on the bus would have been the ideal place to stop .. even if it didnt tie everything up with a bow, as some people seem to like.

I often consider Shawshank a victim of pretentious critics. It is, for the most part, an extremely well received film. However lately, as with anything universally popular, it is deemed "uncool" to like by some. I'm not sure why. It's one of the best written films I can remember, with some remarkable acting across the board. It's also an extremely powerful movie, with some incredibly emotional scenes. There are few people who criticize this film, but I truthfully can't see why anyone would.

Unbelievably bad. Why am I soulless for hating this movie? Ask yourself, if you're not a right-wing hick who supports capital punishment, or at the very least the concept of prison as punishment, how is this life affirming for you? It's telling you what you yourself feel in your heart. Its depiction of prison is glorious, and I would choose to go on holiday there. Cakes are baked, books are read, and everything's hum-diddly-dum. Its popularity proves that it is an opiate of the retarded.

The best cinematic debut before or since, this film is a veritable mountain of hardship, friendship and [hum!] redemption in the face of adversity. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are now the classic male screen couple, and so they should be; their friendship is so heart warming and subtly realised that the audience finds themselves utterly immersed in the world of the film with 10 minutes of the opening. Frank Darabont should be beatified in the Church of Cinema for this, his great achievement!

For a sentimental inspirational piece, it's really well-done, but that doesn't fly with me. There's really not that much emotional depth or character development here and there's really no moral depth either (it's a very black and white film for the sake of narrative convenience). Truly awe inspiring in its depth and vision, The Shawshank Redemption redefines the level of respect a viewer can have for the characters in a film.
