A very stale film with impressive art-direction and a memorable musical score.

This could have been a snooze-fest, but I think Spacey and Moore, amongst others, deliver a performance we can feel.

Spacey is God, and so is Postlethwaite. A film that finds itself in dangerous waters in terms of story, is miraculously saved by the two deities...

Um, if your a middle-aged woman this would probably be a good movie for you. Well done and everything, and some interesting facts about good old Nefoundland, but not my kind of movie.

My parents are Newfies and thought this movie was great. They convinced me to watch it and now I want two hours of my life back. Dreadfully boring.

Random corny-ness. I like Julianne Moore.

Spacey was an odd choice but it looks and sounds good, unusual mix of atmospheres and cutseyness.

A pretty satisfying rendition of Annie Proulx's fantastic novel. If only Julianne Moore had never set foot on the set...

Not bad, but not good either. Not a lot of meat on the bones of this story

One of the worst films I've ever seen; I couldn't even finish it.

"Hallström's rendering of place and time is quaint and evocative even if the film, as a whole, moves at the speed of a glacial ice flow." - Ed Gonzalez

Enjoyable, but too classy and safe to leave much of an impression.

A tall tale, a dark tale, a droll tale, arch, sardonic, grotesque, gaudy, absurd, odd, occult, unnatural -- loaded, in short, with the hallmarks of contemporary Serious Fiction. Spacey (acting like a half-wit), Blanchett (acting like a cream tart), Dench (acting crusty), and Moore (acting with an accent) invest it with some of the traits of Serious Cinema as well. It's still tasteless.

The actors sleepwalk and their attempts at Newfoundland dialect are painfully bad. Gordon Pinsent steals the show away from the headliners, God love him - he was wonderful in a small role.
