Kinji Fukasaku used a lot of the same film techniques in this as he did with his Battles Without Honor and Humanity series. The all-star cast and the epic scope of the film really raised this to another level.

Plays like a who's who of Japanese character actors (which is fun), and a history-bending account of double-crosses, murder and general mayhem (which is better). The ending deals a surprising yet fantastic Guignol kind of narrative perversity.

aka Yagyu Clan Conspiracy. This is a brilliant and engaging samurai drama. It amazes me that Fukasaku completed both this and the equally epic Swords of Vengeance in the same year.
