One of the sweetest comedies I know. Every actor is perfect in his or her part, and Lubitsch's touch is particularly delicate here.

As comfortable as slipping into an old cable-knit sweater. Lubitsch's light touch is tempered by some rather serious sentiments (heartbreak, depression, loneliness, uncertainty), but never so much that he risks losing the thread of warm comedy that's central to his appeal. You couldn't ask for a better cast to carry off this premise; certainly no leading man was ever more fitting than Jimmy Stewart (though it does make sense that they couldn't resist tackling the same premise with Tom Hanks).

THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER charmed my god damn ass off. I shouldn't have expected anything less from a Lubitsch movie starring James Stewart. The infamous irony at the center of the romance unravels in amusing ways (although Kralik is a little weasel for keeping Novak in the dark) and while the narrative flirts with a few sad moments it ends with a great sense of fulfillment and happiness. It has a well-rounded and likable supporting cast, too!

Simply slow moving, and uneventful. I hate to give a movie with Jimmy Stewart a bad score, but if I couldn't even tell you the synopsis after watching it, then it is not a good movie.

Heartwarming, love-affirming, uplifting, and other saccharine sentiments which this film somehow manages to come by with grace and sincerity. Together Ernst Lubitsch and Jimmy Stewart are the ultimate combination of geniality.

A highly enjoyable film. Jimmy Stewart is as good as always, this time playing a more flawed and less immediately likable character than usual. The acting is generally good, at least in how it fits the film. The writing is sharp, and Lubitsch's direction is more than adequate. It's much better than You've Got Mail, for sure.

Lubitsch reached full bloom in the mid 30's and by this point was making his finest films, and this is indisputably one of them. It is a very funny and genuinely sweet (not "sweetener" sweet) comedy, the dialogues are excellently written and the characters are fabulously well-rounded and amiable, their stories engrossing.

Yet another entertaining Lubitsch film that combines good comedy with a little social commentary. Stewart is great at the center of the film and the supporting cast does well with their parts.

Such a fun, freewheeling comedy with a great concept and another excellent Jimmy Stewart performance. He's backed up by a wonderful supporting cast of character actors. Lubitsch's direction makes the film feel really alive as his camera moves about the store and it ends with a sweet Christmas message. Seriously, why isn't this more of a Christmas classsic?

Although classified as a romantic comedy, the film is not so much funny, as it is extremely entertaining. The romance is brilliant, it is approached unlike most films, and it ends up like most films, but throughout the picture I found myself deeply enjoying the non cliche romanticism up until the very last moment. An extremely charming cast of characters prevent this film from being at all boring, and make it an extremely worthwhile experience.

Very sweet classic! Stewart is priceless as ever, and the rest of the cast was charming, too. A very refreshing movie that reflects how business was run "in the old days." And a very sweet story about our ideals and how we build people up in our minds and what happens when reality doesn't always live up... or does it? :) Highly, highly recommended!!

Very good acting all around, with most of the story quite enjoyable. However, personally, I cannot see Jimmy's character, who seems to be reasonable, falling for this mean, childish 'woman'. It should have been longer, giving reasons for his actions. However, despite a few annoying scenes because of that, I still shed a tear at the 'happy' ending, even at the eighth viewing.

Pretty big disappointment - I hate to say that You've Got Mail is better, I really do. All the scenes without Jimmy Stewart are painful. The ending was forced and rushed, Jimmy Stewart's friend was annoying (at least in You've Got Mail Tom Hanks had Dave Chappelle as his buddy) and it just came off as unrealistic. Still, Jimmy is so fuckin likable its hard to not enjoy watching a lot of these scenes with him. It owned when he just beat the shit out of that guy in the shop. Hell yeah.

These are diligently charming scenes in an Americanized, wintry pre-war Budapest. I just think that they are often in the wrong order, and when they aren't, the romance seems a bit laborious.

So incredibly adorable! No wonder The Shop Around the Corner (1940) has stood the test of time! James Stewart.... I know it's been said all the time..... but what a man! He pulls off his part with such ease. Margaret Sullavan was an actress who picked her parts well, and she sure picked a winner this time, cementing her legacy as one of the best actresses of her generation! Splendid work from the master Ernst Lubitsch. Still taps on the basic human desires to make this a heartfelt love story.

The fact that the romance doesn't reveal itself at the cafe initially bothers me. Stewart's twisting of the knife about the fictional fiancé seems unnecessary cruel. The Hungarian setting doesn't add anything but I guess it's based on a play there. Annoying delivery boy. Ultimately, this is a decent film that is simply overshadowed by Stewart's other Christmas classic. Fav scenes: Felix Bressart was a great friend who always had Stewart's back.

Speechless. What can I say? Everything is spot on: comedy, characters, and the story. Yes, it is pretty simple, very predictable, but which romantic comedy other than The Apartment -it is much more than a romantic comedy- isn't? Perfect answer to “How much can the cinema make people happy?”

These people are all amazing jerks. The fun train chugs along without you realizing until too late that you've been pulled into a moment of stark emotion - and then you're back out again. Excellent use of light, shadow, and depth of field. Not perfect, flawed - but fascinating and warm.

Stewart is manipulative and violent, Sullavan is off-putting and arrogant. As a result, the central romance falls somewhat flat. The comedy fares a bit better, not often dipping below moderately amusing, and it's nicely photographed. Inexplicably set in Budapest.

A huge letdown after the hype. Stewart as Kralik is affable as always, but as a fan of classic Hollywood movies, this is the first movie I've seen in a long while that just FEELS like it is old. From pacing to implausible coincidences to Margaret Sullivan's poorly written character to the rushed, contrived ending, Shop did not grab me. Expected PSI: 94

Normally I roll my eyes at romantic comedies due to their wild but thin get-them-together plots. But this one grows very organically -- the office romance has been around as long as there have been offices! -- and there's a decent storyline (even when at times it turns dark, covering attempted suicide and spousal infidelity) around it too. It's all too evident where this drama will end up; it's still interesting watching the humorous way it unfolds.

Small, Sweet, and quaint, despite Kralik's odd decisions to string along Novak's character for much longer than is reasonably necessary. Also, once Kralik turns into a manager he becomes quite the aggressor. Besides this, they certainly don't make films like this anymore. I love the simple conversations with actors just working through tons of dialogue.

Lubitsch's gracious and graceful handling of Laszlo's romantic comedy about two lonelyhearts working in a Budapest notions shop. James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, as has been unanimously remarked, do not remind you much of Hungarians, but this is small bother to someone with as large a reality problem as Ernst Lubitsch.

James Stewart is as charming as ever in this warm and funny drama. The characters are very well written, the jokes are funny and I love the setting. The way the shop and its employees are crafted really makes you feel like you work there and are part of the 'Matuschek' family. I love the way the snow looks in this, the way it falls in front of the camera is glorious. This film is like a warm blanket you wrap around yourself in the winter.

Well-acted and genuine, the only thing that put me off was the very conventional ending. But, what leads up to it is a very well written, with believable characters, and a great supporting cast. Stewart and Sullavan rock in this movie. Still something was "missing" that prevents me from considering it a "masterpiece".

Enjoyable romantic comedy. A bit overrated, but it's a very good example of the genre from the period and I think a more interesting performance from Stewart than I am used to at this part of his career. (For me, he really improved and got more interesting as an actor as he aged and didn't really do his best work until the late 40s and 50s.) It's just a very nice movie, though I couldn't help thinking some of Stewart's behavior after learning the secret comes across as mean-spirited.

One of the greatest comedies ever made, the film thrives on its sharp writing, its active camera, and a humane approach to genuine flaws and simple misunderstandings. The shifts and turns in our understanding of characters (and their understanding of each other) bring liveliness to the film. Also, the performance by Frank Morgan elicits a complex series of reactions, while Stewart and Sullivan are excellent in the leads.
