Reminded me a little of Dark City, except it took place in an underground government laboratorium, not a city, that was well-lit with commercial-grade flourescent lights, not dark. And the creepy guys who make you sleep? They were Laurence Fishburne in a quarrantine suit. And Shell Beach? The Grand Canyon. And the machine that rearranges the city when everyone sleeps? Biotechnology. And Jennifer Connelly? Not in it. So yeah. EXACTLY like the Matrix.

"The Signal" is a decent enough sci-fi thriller that tries awful hard to play it's cards close to the chest, but realizes about half way through that you can't float the whole movie on suspense and goes balls to the wall crazy by the end. As a die hard sci-fi fan, I dug it, but I can see how it wouldn't be appealing to everyone.

A pretty good movie that used twilight zone logic to have a good buildup and an ultimately somewhat disappointing and rushed ending.

Enough good ideas and eye-catching visuals to make you believe something exceptional was just over the horizon. Unfortunately the ending leaves you standing there with your dick in your hand.

Put this story in the hands of a director, not someone who just got out of the asylum. Yes, the production company that makes a whole lot of shark movies.

I think the movie loses some ground as it goes on, but the first half or so is pretty tense. I had no idea about it going in so I didn't see things coming. It had a good atmosphere, and creepy music, and the story was interesting. II was enjoying myself until the main character became Sonic and it ended up getting a little cheesy. However, I don't know if I understand the ending criticisms because I understood what was going on and I'm an idiot.

Arguably the best one act alien abduction movie ever. Possibly a really solid two act alien abduction movie. An absolutely dreadful three act alien abduction movie.

Gorgeously shot alien abduction movie that unfortunately ends up mistaking "complex" for "confusing". Don't try to be David Lynch if you have no idea how.

It does a few cool things but boring protagonists and an overly convoluted plot detract too much from the experience.

Despite the minuscule budget (most of which was probably spent on Fishburne, the weakest cast member), "The Signal" is huge in scope and vision. The cinematography, score and acting are top notch. Unfortunately the final minutes simultaneously disappointed me while making me nostalgic for my Sonic the Hedgehog game cartridges.

The Signal is weird, scattershot, and confusing for most of its running time, even if the mystery is ultimately not as interesting as the film builds it up to be. It's a letdown, actually, which is a shame. There's some real talent shown behind the camera, but the plot needed a couple of additional re-writes. It's stylish and visually fantastic, and it has a message, but it's hard to get over how much of it relies on building to mysteries that turn out to be underwhelming and unsatisfactory.

Story's balls but there are some visual flourishes that brought to mind those fancy comics people call 'graphic novels', pretty cool.

Succesfully brings together a few things I started to hate by now: indie -sincere moments-, slomo, possibility of scifi rather than the real deal. Bad movie bad, no food for you tonight.

My biggest problem with Beyond the Black Rainbow is that it wasn't an adaptation of a YA novel, so not only was this a perfect find, but also I'm an idiot.

This is really fricking cool. It's got more weird, wild-ass energy than just about any other 2014 movie to date, and it ZOOMS into places most other films are too hesitant and/or chickenshit to go. Better yet, it trusts its audience to follow it through all its frequent, bizarre, dreamlike narrative zigzags. Insane, heady stuff--at its best, it's like a teenage alien abduction flick as conceived by David Lynch.

There are some really pretty shots, and the initial build-up is pretty cool, but it feels like they spend the entire movie building up mysteries and then just sort of give up with the ending.

Sure, there are a lot of misses here and you're going to see the ending coming from a mile away...but there's also some good stuff here too, especially some good cinematography and some general creepiness that makes it worth watching.

Predictable, aimless... it could have gone somewhere if they did something with the concept. I think it was poorly acted and directed and written really.

The first third of the film - setup - is very promising. There is characters, a conflict between them for dramatic purposes, and a mysterious enemy - hacker they are pursuing... And then it's all thrown away with one huge plot twist after another. Just like playing some alien survival horror video game, inspired by anything from Phillip K. Dick to X-Files. Attempts to make this whole mess emotionally engaging just makes it annoying and just barely bearable.

All I could see when the lead actor was on screen was his pedo-stache. Somebody should've told him to shave it off or take some hormones so he could grow real facial hair. As for the movie itself, I have a hard time believing anyone over the age of 16 would enjoy it too much

Interesting plot, but in the end all that you get is a storyless story. They try to cover this up by using (indeed) great effects and slowmos but there simply is nothing to tell. This is one big plothole.

At first, I enjoyed it. Around a third into a movie, I started wishing it could be over already. The characters are all dumb and unlikable, the plot is garbage, and the only saving grace is that this movie looks pretty cool.

An Indie movie an ecstasy. It could have been something really great, the buildup is quite intense, but it falls apart near the end. Nevertheless I have to give credit to the creators of this film, it is really something unique. I hope they'll learn from the mistakes in this one and their next project should be something very special.

Just three words: cow, aliens, carousel. Yeah, and that's just about as confusing and meaningless as the rest of the movie. Except for the cinematography and score it was just a waste of time.

The Signal is a little bit different and I like that. The main character acts amazing so I have to give credit to him. Fishburn doesn't fit in the movie though, it was better to find someone else. The ending was disappointing which is a shame... 54/100.

Some of it is nicely done, but it gives away or makes it easy to guess pretty much every reveal really early and then has nothing to do except have characters find out or even be surprised by the things we already knew were true or on the way. But at times creates a dreamlike atmosphere quite distinct from the norms of Hollywood. So there's that.

The visuals are stunning but they don't hide the fact that the third act is complete rubbish and the ending unfulfilling. The ideas sound promising, but major plot holes and a forced massive twist drags the movie down to an average level of teen sci-fi.
