Charming and wise at times, but sharply depressing in a corrosive way. There's really only one scene that shines brilliantly. Although it was salient and put believable dramatic acting on display, I wish I hadn't seen this movie. It hit very close to home. Maybe I'll think about it again when I'm in a better place. ~ A thank you to the filmmakers for putting a loving but non-sexual relationship at the forefront. It's quite refreshing to see women and gay people as lead protagonists.

We all do strange things in high school. One decision I'm still suffering for is the (since then oft-regretted) pledge to watch every single film starring Owen WIlson's little brother. So far I'm 46/46. With very few good ones in there. So imagine my joyful surprise that this film not only had a solid Luke performance, it was actually one of his very best films. Talk about a backhanded compliment.

After he attempts suicide, Milo (Bill Hader) goes to stay with his twin sister Maggie (Kristen Wiig), and they grapple with the issues of their joint past and present. Hader is quite strong, Wiig nearly as good (though the script lets her down), and Craig Johnson's direction is surprisingly sharp. But the material is the same middle-class white dysfunctional family angst indie comedy-drama that we've seen too many times before, and the strength of the presentation can only make up for so much.

Take two great comedic talents and put them in a very serious, de-saturated film so that the joyous, comedic moments become sharper -- it's kind of TOO simple a strategy take, but it fucking works too.

Hader and Wiig are very good, but it's just a bunch of melodrama. Best use of "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship in a film, though. Take that, "Mannequin".

I'm sure there's a Hader/Wiig backlash brewing, if it doesn't already exist but fuck it. I've always enjoyed these two, and their chemistry alone is enough of a hook for me. Like a far less nuanced (but funnier and leaner...hooray for an indie that hits its marks and get off the stage) "You Can Count On Me" that delivers laughs, drama and a poignant bro/sis relationship before resorting to a cheap "out" during a crucial climactic scene. Luke Wilson as the sweet natured everydude is just great.

Hader and Wiig should get another opportunity to play brother and sister in something, because this script and this direction does not do them justice. We have two siblings try to kill themselves at the same moment in time at the very beginning. An interesting concept. Shouldn't we, you know, poke and prod and try to understand WHY they wanted to kill themselves? It's this sort of shallow plotting that makes me scoff, despite a few glowing moments (which work only because of the leads).

I liked this, but did not love it. A lot of the plot devices seemed forced, and as much as I enjoyed both lead performances, I could never really care about their relationship. I mean, all of their problems would have been solved, if they had just once acted like normal people.

As a big SNL fan, I of course love the two leads but the film dissapoints. It's yet another sappy drama with at least some decent acting. I did enjoy it but the Duplass brothers do this much better.

I didn't really care for it. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are pretty much the only reason to see the movie. The story just seemed like an amalgamation of a bunch of other indie comedy/dramas, and offered very little new content. I just felt like I'd seen the same basic film several times before, and I was left pretty bored. I suppose it's worth a watch if you like this kind of stuff, but otherwise, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Hader and Wiig are definitely the highlights of this movie. Who would have thought they could handle the dramatic elements so deftly. The script on the other hand, while never boring was sometimes treading water like it wasn't moving towards a climax/ending. The score set the tone of the movie perfectly and the lip sync scene was surprisingly not cliche in the slightest. Additionally the directing and cinematography had some nice touches.

A mostly by-the-numbers indie flick. But, it does what it does very well. Heder and Wiig are surprisingly good, and they make you care about their characters more than you would expect, given the relatively weak story.

Just didn't work for me at any point. Good performances, but I could never buy into the film's depiction of depression among the two of them. That's not to suggest that they were disingenuous, exactly, but the music swells and retread plot points did nothing new. Every scene felt like it was taken from another movie.

Good actors / characters / chemistry, but the film as a whole falls short of greatness. Despite some memorable scenes, not much happened overall in the story. It was a little bit too character-centric. Other films about lost people finding themselves have managed to have a bit more going on.

Belongs in the genre of "indie-serious". Luckily, because of its two likeable leads, the film rises from unwatchable to "eh, maybe check it out if you like Hader and Wiig". I woke up the next morning disliking the film the more I thought about it, so this 60 may be a bit generous if scores are important to you.

The Skeleton Twins feels like a missed opportunity that doesn't know how to reach or unlock it's potential. Kristen Wiig & Bill Hader are impressive together and they take on roles with more layers than we're used to. I would definitely like to see them pair up again. But they are criminally let down by a poor story and bland direction & writing that just doesn't know what to do with it's subject matter. Topics such as depression & suicide are raised, but there is no climax or point to be made.

There's these 40ish twins, see. One's Kristen Wiig and one's Bill Hader. And they're both suicidally depressed, for no real reason that the movie makes clear. But we get to follow them around as they get high on nitrous oxide and drunkenly lip synch and do lotsa other wacky stuff. And after awhile the movie's over, and we get up outta our chairs and turn off the TV and say to our spouses "well, now what do you wanna do?"

Though the script itself is good, the pillars holding it up are Hader and Wiig and their dynamic, adorable chemistry. All of the comedy comes from the characters, there's no plot devices clumsily shoehorned in for the sake of a laugh, and it lends to the believability of the drama. The ending requires a heavily invested audience, which is ballsy, but by that point it had earned it from me.

Hader and Wiig rise above a formulaic, if at times both hilarious and poignant, script. Worth it for the epic Jefferson Starship sibling lip-sync; here, Hader and Wiig bring the chemistry that made them so great together on SNL to new heights. One of those movies that's solid until it has to end and doesn't quite know how...

The Skeleton Twins is a better offering from Wiig than her previous year's Girl Most Likely; though the film is still a drab rendition of yet another dysfunctional American family. Hader and Wiig's chemistry and familiarity from their shared years on SNL often comes through onscreen, though it's far less engaging to watch than one might expect. Their performances are decent, though the plot merely involves their characters straining their bond before becoming closer in the end.

Started out funny & poignant but turned out to be another one of those puritanical bait-and-switch films. Lure audiences in with the premise of a movie about nomonogamous relationships, then proceed to "reform" the characters from their wayward ways. I'm not exactly Captain Polyamory, but I these evangelical outreach films are propagandist drivel. Technically this was secular, but it was still ultimately a film about weirdos coming "back to the fold" to live "good", "healthy" conventional lives.

One of the better dark comedies I've seen in awhile. Wiig and Hader play there roles to perfection, having a realistic relationship of a broken brother and sister. Luke Wilson deserves credit for playing a nice guy who we can relate to the main characters making fun of, but don't consider him a rube. Just an all around solid solid movie that I enjoyed because the topic usually interests me.

The first 10 minutes is good, and it has moments of very good interactions and writing throughout, but the rest is just cliche cliche cliche. It feels like they had an outline for the movie, and were forced to start shooting before they fleshed it out; having to slap in some entire scenes from other movies and books. I guess the takeaway is both Heder and Wiig can do serious roles if they choose.

Chemistry is huge in films like this, so we starts off on the right foot immediately by casting Hader and Wiig. Apparently they're capable of good dramatic work, but the best moments are the rare ones when Hader and Wiig let loose and play to their comedic strengths; not only are they welcome moments of levity but they also go a long way in showing a genine sibling relationship. The film is perhaps too hesitant to really get into the deepest and darkest corners of their lives, but it works.

Likeable, engaging dramedy with the same story of unhappy people getting better connecting with the right person. The little twist on the story is that this time it's connection between siblings, and not a romantic one. Awesome lip-sync scene is the highlight of this movie. This movie sucked and a large reason why was because it was marketed as a comedy starring two actors known primarily (99%) for doing comedy. I don't know what's crawled up Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig's asses recently where he's a complete sellout with his phone commercials and she wants nothing more in the world than to be in depressing dramas about losers, but they need to get their shit together and do more comedic roles. It's like Hollywood is screwing them with these lack of comedy roles.

The screenplay here is fairly formulaic in structure as far as indie dramedys go, with cycles of music-video scenes of personal reflection or vague comedic resolve following those of conflict. That said, its execution is excellent (thanks to wonderfully genuine performances from Hader, Wiig, and Wilson), its central relationship unique (i.e. non-romantic), and its subject matter darker (albeit resolved in a disappointingly easy ending) which set it a step above many of its genre counterparts.
