The Sky Crawlers

Oshi is talented, but his visual style & ability to steward atmosphere are often his downfall. This is set in a very interesting world which we don't get told much about. It's "concept over character" with a script focused on character drama, yet the world-building is too subtle. Equally, conceptual and narrative elements are laid on too thick at the end. Knowing the twist in advance helps in some of the setup hitting harder, but its so slow that the foreknowledge of events might also kill you.
