Having referred to Emily Mortimer as Emily Watson in my LOVELY & AMAZING review, I decided to punish myself with another movie in which she is required to awkwardly display her nude body for a man's inspection in much the same way. Don't worry--I made doubly sure not to get aroused, merely stew in my own shame. Which then started to arouse me, but by that point I'd been sufficiently turned off by Jessica Alba's attempt at a Malaysian concubine to weather the storm. Also, cultural genocide.

It was slow but still emotionally gripping. I truly felt some love by the end of the movie (or maybe that was just Jessica's hotness). Not very involved but not a bad film by any measure.

The Sleeping Dictionary isn't a good romantic drama, although it isn't a terrible film. It's overlong, yet paradoxically still brief in the moments of importance, and none of the drama or romance works because of how poorly written and developed these characters are. But the scenery is gorgeous, the actors are strong, and you could do a whole lot worse than this. You could do much better, too, which is why The Sleeping Dictionary doesn't get a recommendation from me.

All points for excellent, talented, aged British actress Brenda Blethyn. Sets were beautiful, but Alba dull, story predictible. A sweet movie with your girlfriend.

One of the very few movies of which I was actually unsure of the outcome. Granted though it did have a beginning which made me unsure of the conflict.

When a young, enthusiastic Englishman is transferred to Sarawak to join the British colonial government, he is confronted with very unorthodox local customs. When he meets the beautiful young Selima, he faces heartbreaking choices.
