Grand is the carefully weaved sinister tones, and a clear distinction beetween the human aspects we're meant to see, and the aspects just as present but hidden...Only the most minutiae of detail in the dialogue and a understanding of the driving forces behind people bring these subtleties to light. Bravo, the most superb acting, this films foremost strength.

Simmering drama is cleverly constructed, and well directed in getting around censorship issues; helped immeasurably by brilliant performances: Bogarde, as cold and ruthless as he ever was, is matched by Smith's almost femme fatale; the intriguing B story which evolves regarding the husband's shady motivations ultimately almost proves more fascinating than the central tale!

Toda a atmosfera aqui serve quase como prequel de O Criado, nós vemos com clareza o Bogarde se transformando no mordomo daquele filme, mas o final desse aqui é tão avacalhado que só não estraga o filme todo porque o Losey é muito mestre do seu ofício.
