The Snowman

I prefer the original ending where he wakes up, not in his bed, but in the padded white confines of a sanitarium.

For me, this is almost perfection... a sentiment which is based 90% on nostalgia, having first seen it as a young child and grown up revisiting it frequently on VHS. Yet even when I disregard that history, I can still see the elements which make this a classic - the universality of the story, the crystal clear language of facial expressions, the beautiful warm humour, the magical realism, the haunting music. And of course the ending - it still brings tears to my eyes every time.

Wonderful short film.

The Snowman is a wonderful piece of work; it's understated, but beautiful animation naturally would have taken a lot of effort back in 1982, and it's an effort I'm glad was made. The sad but beautiful story earns every bit of emotion it conjures. This simple, wordless animation ends up being more effective and sincere in its provocation than 90% of the more complicated scripts that get churned out now.

I liked the art and style, but not the story itself.

It's pretty cute and and enjoyable, with some nice animation. Still, there's something about it I found a little unsettling and it's rather tiring at times.

This is adorable. Beautiful. Delightful. The music is great, the animation is great, it's so whimsical and fun and cozy. I have vague memories of the book from childhood, but had forgotten the actual story of it entirely. I can absolutely see myself making this an annual tradition, though. Just a sweet little treat of a movie.

Beautiful music. A story in children's eyes in its full sense, with a one-night tour through all earthly enjoyments and the ending showing a straight acceptance of the tour's dreamlike character, as temporal yet enchantingly significant.

Nice enough, something you can watch with Granny and spawner of 1000 jokes involving Aled Jones's voice cracking during 'Walking in the Air'.

As charming now as it must have been thirty years ago, this wordless half-hour is beautiful and bittersweet.

So incredibly cute. And the ending?! :(
