Is this a movie? Quite close to its ending, I felt a sense of 'drama' occurring. But other than that, this doesn't really have a film feeling. It feels more like a dramatisation that you'd get on a DVD along with a pamphlet on teen depression, because this "film's" contents are so inert. There's nothing offensively bad here, aside from just how mediocre it is. It starts, it goes, and then it ends, but it never moves.

Face to face with Anthony Hopkins during a short scene it dawned on me: Hugh Jackman may seem like a great actor, but there's something that never works for me and it's because it feels like he's a collection of carefully studied mimicry. He's premium at that, but there's something amiss. What that something is, is shown by Hopkins, who sits opposite him and doesn't even try. Hopkins was simply born with it, he's a prodigy. He's on a level that even talented actors like Jackman can never reach.

“The Son” is a powerful and affecting film that is brilliantly acted, beautifully shot, and expertly directed. The film is a must-see for anyone who appreciates thoughtful and empathetic storytelling, and it is sure to leave a lasting impression on audiences long after the credits roll.

Not as brilliant as 'The Father' but less will certainly do, as this is a gut-wrenching melodrama in its own right. The film touches on various subjects such as the potential fallout from divorce and trying to connect with a troubled youth but it's ultimately about tough choices, about trying to course correct in terms of parenting style and about coming to terms with the fact that a parent's best efforts and intentions might not always be sufficient.

Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby were all great. McGrath played the mentally ill son quite well. The story does not spare the viewer any of the dirty laundry that feeds the characters. For people who have lived through this type of situation, it might bring back some bad memories and misplaced guilt. Worth watching, but not particularly enjoyable.

If you make a metaphorical analysis and watch it from a psychology POV it is actually good. But from a cinematic POV its very bad.

A tough movie to watch. I'm not saying it because of the message or attempt of emotion, but the cringey attempts to make the audience feel empathy for it's characters. There are many teachable messages the film tries to inject, however it lacked the punch it needed and came across preachy and unrealistic. The climax was supposed to be a giant slap in the face moment, however it lacked a certain punch to drive the message home.

The inevitable comparison to The Father doesn't land favorably. There's a lack of perspective and understanding from Zeller on the subject matter. The titular son character isn't believably written or portrayed, which makes the entire film crumble around him. Dialogue that might work perfectly fine on the stage sounds completely unnatural in this context. The performances feel stilted, even from Jackman and Dern. Jackman's accent is all over the place and gets unintentionally funny at points.
