It is hard to find anything really "wrong" with the movie--the special effects were good, the acting was fine, the action scenes were tense, the touching moments were touching... But, I was not really wowed by the movie. I think I expected more details about the fantasy world, rather than just kids having to escape from goblins and save-the-world. I would have loved to learn more about Arthur Spiderwick and all the creatures he discovered, rather than focusing on the goblin-creatures and actio

I think I would have liked this more if I had a better understanding of it prior to having seen it. I was expecting a more in-depth story and plot. However, with it's being just one film (instead of a trilogy, etc.) I can understand why the story wasn't more involved (though other films seem to have been able to succeed in this, such as Narnia: LW&W). That said, I did think it was a good film, well acted, and good special effects. Worth seeing!

This is a HELL of a lot better than I expected. Yes, it's conventional, but everything works. An uplifting, charming, downright sweet family movie that I liked so much I'm kind of ashamed to admit it

Color me surprised - I skipped it in theaters, dismissing it as a hop-on on the post-Harry Potter "kids & magic" craze - and it is - but it's also a fun, lively, fairly well-acted, and entertaining little fantasy flick. More violent than I expected too. I probably would have liked it more if I was 15 years younger, but it's not half bad at all.

For a book adaptation that isn't 'Potter' or 'LOTR,' Spiderwick certainly held its ground well thanks to some great effects and an otherwise enjoyable set of performances.

aside from some ugly plot holes that none of the target audience would notice, this movie is quite enjoyable. good story, good action, great aspects of fantasy and adventure. could have been more packed with fantasy as it seems to lull in parts, but what is there is definately satisfying.

Gets the job done in that way where you know what's going to happen, but you're still watching it out of mild curiosity to see how they choose to roll it out.

Nothing too remarkable here, but it should make for decent family entertainment (wee ones may not like it--the creatures here are mean and violent). The element of the family dealing with a divorce adds a needed touch of depth. It was sort of pointless to have Freddie Highmore play a pair of twin brothers since it rarely focuses on Simon.By the way, I noticed that composer James Horner re-uses parts of his score from Casper...

Nice fairytale. The fantasy proclaimed to be similar to this are for more adult audiance, so it was strange at the beginning to see something so simple and really about not very heroic children and not so fantastic world.

Much better than I thought it would be. Awesome movie for the age range of 8-14. Younger kids may be scared by some scenes in the movie. Wonderful for the whole family over 8 years old!

This movie is a little bit like Bridge to Terabithia (you can see fairy creatures only if you believe in them), the Neverending Story (flying in the air by fairy animal), Hulk (when you get angry you turn to green monster), House on the Borderland (people captured inside house surrounded by monsters). Story itself is for youngsters, but the last fight is pretty impressive.

Decent enough children's movie. It'll keep them entertained but I won't lie the adults will be wishing they're watching something else. It's nowhere near the laugh-catastrophe "Bridge to Terabithia" was though, so that's a plus.

The film very effectively captures the feel of the book. All the performances were good and Freddy Highmore does a wonderful job portraying two distinctly different twins. The special effects were appropriate and captured the imagination of the books. The film is a wonderful family film that will captivate adults and kids alike.

A fairly good young cast and some nice effects mean this is a pretty enjoyable film. This film seems to struggle out of the starting blocks however, and never seems to really get going. It is a shame as the story and cast are quite strong. "The Spiderwick Chronicles" sets a good standard for childrens fantasy adventure but is not exciting or grandious enough to be a really good film.

"Fatherless children are the order of the day, but the film develops this theme no more than the absolute minimum, instead content to stage swordfights and races-against-time between its plucky child protagonists and their monstrous enemies." - Nick Schager

It only takes few pages of the book to realize how much improving this movie needs. It's sad how screenwriters always want to put every detail of the book into the movie and they lose the plot somewhere in that process.

Tries to be in the same league as films like the Narnia or Harry Potter series, but lacks the charm or spirit of those franchises. Maybe I'm just culturally biased and like my kids' fantasy films to have British protagonists and not bratty constantly yelling American ones.

Not terrible but nothing special either. As an adult this film didn't offer me anything, but since I'm not the target audience I guess I should have known better. I also have seen much worse (but also a lot better) films inside this genre. Probably not worth your time though.

Great book, great concept. The movie starts promisingly but quickly stumbles. Weird, stilted acting, a plot that hurries all too quickly along and leaves out crucially much of the book makes for a forgettable experience.

Top badass moment? Seeing a film that's as wholesome as a loaf of "hand-made to a 300 year-old family recipe and baked in small batches" artisan bread. It was very nice. Parents stay out of the way, kids solve mystery, clear-cut goodies & baddies fight it out, some lovely CGI runs around and it makes little sense if you think about it too much. But it doesn’t do anything unexpected that’s not built into it, like a toaster. 1 cat (that doesn’t really do much), no chainsaws or decapitations.

Decent. Acting is pretty good. Creature effects are just okay. Story is predictable and never super interesting. The pace is plodding. And the human world is surprisingly mundane and plain as fantasy goes. But somehow, it is a fun and cute family movie. Lots of laughs. It just lacks the depth, better special effects, cleaner pacing and better acting that could have given it a high score. Worth watching with family. It's a pretty fun ride in the style of Hook and Casper! The music is good too!

While I still haven't gotten around to organize the lead into 1947, a adventure movie was requested and this one looked interesting. Ended-up being kind of a one-trick pony, or one-trick goblin, or whatever those little monsters were, but it was mildly fun. Certainly a world i could appreciate, and one they could have built on. We were satisfied enough with this one, but it felt like they could have done so much more with it too.

The "Harry Potter"-inspired gold rush of its decade can be felt, strongly so, but Highmore's terrific performance and some clever motifs earn it good marks.

Memory of the books is loving the aesthetic but frustrated by missed potential. The movie is consistent w that: besides some goofy character designs it's visually gorgeous, with top notch props, sets, shot composition, colors. But the characters are insufferable for most of the film. I don't like protags being unkind. If the film were just "softer" overall, I'd love it. [SPOILERS] I hated the action scene toward the end since pretty sets got wrecked. Unnecessary! Parts reminded me of Time Trap.
