The Spine of Night

It took a little while for me to get invested but when I did I was lost in the world and lore. The rotoscope animation lends itself well to this tale because it makes it feel old, legendary, which makes it more epic. The story could have been told with different animation but I don't think it would have been as potent. Sure, it's hard to care about the characters individually, but the plot works wonderfully. Quite a few memorable (and gory) moments, and the final battle was especially satisfying

The animation will remind you of heavy metal; an 80s gore with blood splashed breast and comically crude anatomy. The storyline is reminiscent of Conan the conqueror. Still it holds your attention with a better soundtrack and sublime casting. Patton is the most recognizable voice, and he really puts his soul into it. I don't think many adventure fantasy movies from the 80s hold up. This movie is a great replacement for the nostalgia that I still have for that genre. Thank you. 4/5

The comparisons to 1981's Heavy Metal are very much undeserved. Heavy Metal has absolutely gorgeous animation throughout, but the animation in Spine is extremely ugly and amateurish. It's weird that a movie made 40 years later looks so much worse. Laughably bad plot too. If you want to see a much better film, just watch the original Heavy Metal. Comparisons aside, this is just a completely crap movie.

A bargain bin gross fantasy paperback find, out of that bin the bookstore keeps in the back. The perverted uncle of Ralph Bakshi's fantasy movies. Patton Oswalt let slip a fat B sound Toss in some 80s rock and a Loc-Nar and we have a better Heavy Metal sequel than the hell we got.

Here's something different in the way of current animation. A throwback to an earlier style, packed with primitive eroticized violence in a dark doomed world. I can absolutely respect what they were attempting with The Spine of Night (2021), but it was a hard story to get into, and its driving force becomes purely the violence and not much else.
