A young woman finds herself so indelibly imprinted by a lover that her whole existence is oriented by the desire to be with him, to the exclusion of anything else, and without regard to how far she descends. It happens. The theme is worthwhile, and, while this viewer did not see in the film the greatness that Pauline Kael clearly perceived in it, nevertheless one very good reason for watching it is to then read her really wonderful appreciation of its virtues, in When the Lights Go Down.

Isabelle Adjani karakterine öylesine bürünmüş ve yaşadığı dönüşümü o kadar etkileyici yansıtıyor ki, düpedüz oyunculuk şovu.

Much unlike Adjani, this biopic is plain as porridge.

Another one of Truffaut's efforts that was completely lost on me, it had a couple bits here an there that were likable, but for the most part this movie seems to go by without a second thought.

There is some good but really it's just about a woman being an asshole. It's bullshitty though because there's no way you wouldn't marry the daughter of Victor Hugo even if she wasn't as hot as Isabelle is. And she's very hot. Probably had small tits though and lemme tell you British people HATE small titties. Nothing else matters to them. I don't understand it.

Adjani plays the increasing unbalance of her character without guile. That lets the innocence and the lost quality of the character come through. As good as she is, the film doesn't quite work. Truffaut's craftsmanship and emotional purity is in full evidence, but it can't rescue the material. If anything, it contributes to the film's undoing as his devotion to portraying the title character's single-minded descent into madness results in something that grows redundant.

Sensitive and gentle unfolding of characters and story. Beautiful photography.

Overwrought (and without really getting into her psyche--it's just the outward display).

One of the weakest Truffaut films I've seen, but still pretty good. The true story of Victor Hugo's daughter and her fevered obsession to marry a certain young lieutenant (who has little interest in her). Her mania compels her to concoct a series of deceptions and delusions, inevitably to disastrous effect. It has a few of Truffaut's wonderful little moments, and doesn't have any flaws worth speaking of, but it lacks his usual flair and one misses his sense of humor in such a bleak film.
