The script is a little clunky in parts, the acting gets rather hammy, and the treatment of homosexuality is not as advanced and refreshing, or indeed as explicit, as I had hoped, but Willingham's story is good as usual. Its fascination with the troubled psyche of uniformed men presages Sidney Lumet. Ben Gazzara in his debut gives the most restrained performance of the film, which is notable since he's the antagonist, but an appropriate personality profile for his excellent character.

My recollection is of a film that makes a strong impression, and a star, in Gazzara, who makes an even stronger one.

Performance by Gazzara is fascinating and frightening, though the film feels far too much like a televised play in point. Censored homosexual/sadomasocist elements still manage to bubble to the surface, though not much too much is really done these elements.

Intriguing stagey film that was Gazzara's film debut. He plays a probably sociopathic bully who gets off on hazing and mistreating younger students at the military college he attends, going beyond normal hazing to engineer ruining people's lives for no apparent reason. He's often unsettling and unhinged in the role; the character is very interesting.
