The Summit

Selfish people with a retarded fetish defy bad omens, dangerous accidents and better judgment only to get what is coming to them. When people are this obsessed and push their luck to such extremes, it's really hard not feeling like you're watching a horror movie, where you are kind of rooting for the bad guy.

I didn't find it as confusing as some report, but the editing is unfortunate. Still, the perilous tale and the draw dropping landscape is enough to overlook its faults.

Extremely disjointed documentary. I'd suggest opening the 2008 K2 disaster wikipedia page and reading it while you watch. Hard to feel much sympathy for the climbers given the way they present their treatment of pakistani and nepalese guides and porters. At least the footage is incredible and the drama nailbiting.

Probably a bit too slick in splicing the reconstructions and actual footage. Discussion of 'the code' is why I came though and there's plenty of that, even if it felt slightly too finger-pointy in places.

Main motive is to eulogise one of the dead (a compatriot of the filmmaker) and blame another, while bringing in an older tale of wrong to lend support. Hard not to feel that these characters are reckless and selfish, and that exploitation of the locals is constantly rationalised away in order to reach their rather infantile goals. In a tale told in order to pick sides, there isn't enough forensic analysis and the way in which it was put together tends to cloud the issue rather than clarify it.
