A great visual adaptation to entertain your kids, but not necessarily you. Besides the animation, this is really nothing more than a feature length advertisement with terrible illumination humor. Hiring the writer of the latest minions movie was such a choice... I didn't hate it (there isn't enough substance in it to feel strongly either way) I was just very very bored.

I don't care that the plot is thin, because I didn't need more, though I think there is decent characterization. So much material for the fans. Great animation. Awesome music. Legitimately funny. Voice acting is good across the board. Some really awesome scenes. Embraces video game moments without seeming cheesy (like side-scrolling views). Before I saw this I didn't really consider how cool action sequences could be with power-ups and losing them after one hit. This filled me with joy.

Bounces along at a nice pace, riffs off the games well enough. It’s not doing anything new and in reality it’s pretty basic, but the kids laughed their moron little faces off and had a good time, so job done. Got a feeling I’m going to be forced to play a shit tonne of Mario Kart at home for the next 6 months…

Yet another trash installment in the never-ending Illumination saga of mediocre/awful releases. It's barely even a movie, given it functions mostly as a big, long ad for Nintendo products (Mario games, in this case). It has that lovely Illumination™ style of humor throughout it all, the stunning shallow writing we've all grown to love from them, and the immaculate character development we certainly expect to be blown away by. It's awful, really. At least the world they built is pretty, that's it

The critics are wrong. They're just wrong. An inability to find fun and joy with THIS movie, that isn't obnoxiously long, that caters to the young audience AND the longtime Mario players, that tells a simplistic story, sure, but what else to expect from SUPER MARIO - if you can't find your way to enjoying this, this medium just might not be for you. It's not the best thing I'll see this year but it absolutely gave me what I expected and wanted, plus this gives Peach stuff to actually do.

I think for what the movie sets out to do, The Super Mario Bros. Movie pretty much ticks the boxes of an entertaining, reference fan-service heavy movie. A lot of the jokes aren’t amazing but it’s just impressive that there is some competency to a Video Game Movie. Sometimes simple and straightforward is the best way to go. Not high art or anything, but it ticks off almost everything for what Mario should be at least. Voice acting wasn’t that bad, and Jack Black was the highlight as expected.

It's fine. Lot's of fun nods to the fans, including some scenes with visual and audio cues to the games. It's dragged down by the layers of playing it safe, which is depressingly working judging by the box office. Seriously, is there a playlist of "thunderingly obvious songs to play in a scene"? Because this film rattles through them.

Pretty cynical feeling brand exercise with some admittedly gorgeous renders and art depicting all the fun Nintendo stuff. The issues are the lifeless dialogue, having nothing of its own to say and the most cookie cutter kids movie plot I've seen in some time. Would be hard to recommend to anyone over 11 years old. I'm coming down harshly on this one but even though I'm sure they worked hard on it, this film feels wholly inessential.

An endless parade of easter eggs designed to distract from the fact that there is absolutely nothing going on in this movie. A true triumph in crass commercialism sustained by recognizable IP and literally nothing else.

Is this groundbreaking cinema? No. But it's a fun as hell kid's movie that'll please long time Nintendo fans as well. Between this and Sonic, it makes me hopeful that video game adaptations are finally headed in the right direction after years of misfires.

A great voice cast and, as much a video gamer and old school Nintendo fan as I am, I have to admit this movie was pretty boring. Mario seems superfluous in the story, too. Couldn't Princess Peach and Donkey Kong taken care of Bowser? They both seem way more competent and just needed the star ...

A fun computer game tie-in that kinda made me want to play some of the games again. My son (10) said this was the best film he’d seen this year. He loved it. I stayed awake and it held my attention. It had some charm. One for kids I reckon, but it won’t make grown ups wish they were dead.

Plot’s simple as it gets and it treats its villains as jokes - if this wasn’t a “pilot” for what will presumably be a more extensive Nintendo film project (hopefully giving us Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby etc) I’d rate it lower. But its success teaches an important lesson: video game movies don’t have to reimagine lore and iconography for a hypothetical “mainstream audience,” just put the game world on the screen and millions of viewers will come. Nihilistic / suicidal Luma stole the show.

Mumma Mia. Save your money and buy the kids ice cream at the park. At what point did the talent realise there was no saving this monstrosity? PS: Why did Peach need saving? Seemed like she owned the day. Disappointing.

An extremely average movie with far too many obvious, excruciating needledrops and a paper-thin, generic story. But here’s the thing. It’s a Mario movie. It has lots of Mario things and Mario easter eggs. At the cinema! This coupled with a largely exceptional voice cast (Pratt is fine) and about 60% of the jokes landing meant that I still enjoyed myself and had a good time despite recognising it’s not really all that good. But fuck putting that many needledrops in when the score is this great.

Colourful, fast moving adaptation of the classic game. It has a very basic storyline, all the old characters, a few jokes and to its credit doesn’t try to do anything beyond entertain for 90 minutes.

A helluva wonderful time at the movies. The plot is very basic, it may not even be all that good of a screenplay, but who plays Mario games for the script? Looked, felt and breathed just like the games I grew up playing. I didn’t think the pacing was an issue and 92-minute runtime was fine. Pratt wasn’t a bad choice for the lead either, but the rest of the cast was outstanding. Tyler’s score was great too. Cannot recommend it enough to Mario fans, average kids movie or not. Surprising funny too!

Beautifully animated, funny and packed with references. It's about the right length, has enough creativity and at times goes in surprising directions with the humour. The plot is pretty basic, but it doesn't need to be anything more than it is, similar to how the games are. I appreciated how sincere it was, there were no attempts at self-aware, scoffy humour. Not sure what the critics are missing, it's a Mario film. It does what you'd expect, with enough surprises. ps Jack Black is great.

Does The Super Mario Bros. Movie entertain Nintendo die-hards? Perhaps, and good for them. For me the film is a mixed bag of colourful environments, recognisable characters and a plot that feels like a cinematic rendition of gameplay complete with cut-scenes. The animation is good, but the story & dialogue is a tired string of clichés. Black was definitely the star of the film. Rogen & Armisen' Kong wasn't bad either, especially considering I find both actors irritating.

Illumination did their best, but I'm not sure they were the correct studio for the job. It was cute, not as bad as I thought it would be, but there are so many questions left open… and so much cringe to get through…

Illumination is so creatively vacuous that instead of telling a story they told a cliffnotes summary of a story instead. The movie is still fun mostly because Mario music is great and the sheer novelty of seeing a Mario movie that isn't actively atrocious while capturing some of the kinetic fun of Mario games is enough to keep the sheeple like me entertained.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an animated film by Illumination, contrasts with its poorly-received 1993 live-action predecessor. Featuring Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, it follows a blockbuster formula, but its abundant game references and vibrant colors can be tiring. Despite occasional directorial flair, the film ultimately feels exhausting.
