In our current age of defiantly faithless adaptations and expectation-subverting franchise entries, there's something to be said for movies that know exactly what their audiences want and simply give it to them. AND MAKE A BILLION DOLLARS.

A great visual adaptation to entertain your kids, but not necessarily you. Besides the animation, this is really nothing more than a feature length advertisement with terrible illumination humor. Hiring the writer of the latest minions movie was such a choice... I didn't hate it (there isn't enough substance in it to feel strongly either way) I was just very very bored.

I don't care that the plot is thin, because I didn't need more, though I think there is decent characterization. So much material for the fans. Great animation. Awesome music. Legitimately funny. Voice acting is good across the board. Some really awesome scenes. Embraces video game moments without seeming cheesy (like side-scrolling views). Before I saw this I didn't really consider how cool action sequences could be with power-ups and losing them after one hit. This filled me with joy.

Yet another trash installment in the never-ending Illumination saga of mediocre/awful releases. It's barely even a movie, given it functions mostly as a big, long ad for Nintendo products (Mario games, in this case). It has that lovely Illumination™ style of humor throughout it all, the stunning shallow writing we've all grown to love from them, and the immaculate character development we certainly expect to be blown away by. It's awful, really. At least the world they built is pretty, that's it

I think for what the movie sets out to do, The Super Mario Bros. Movie pretty much ticks the boxes of an entertaining, reference fan-service heavy movie. A lot of the jokes aren’t amazing but it’s just impressive that there is some competency to a Video Game Movie. Sometimes simple and straightforward is the best way to go. Not high art or anything, but it ticks off almost everything for what Mario should be at least. Voice acting wasn’t that bad, and Jack Black was the highlight as expected.

The critics are wrong. They're just wrong. An inability to find fun and joy with THIS movie, that isn't obnoxiously long, that caters to the young audience AND the longtime Mario players, that tells a simplistic story, sure, but what else to expect from SUPER MARIO - if you can't find your way to enjoying this, this medium just might not be for you. It's not the best thing I'll see this year but it absolutely gave me what I expected and wanted, plus this gives Peach stuff to actually do.

Is this groundbreaking cinema? No. But it's a fun as hell kid's movie that'll please long time Nintendo fans as well. Between this and Sonic, it makes me hopeful that video game adaptations are finally headed in the right direction after years of misfires.

Bounces along at a nice pace, riffs off the games well enough. It’s not doing anything new and in reality it’s pretty basic, but the kids laughed their moron little faces off and had a good time, so job done. Got a feeling I’m going to be forced to play a shit tonne of Mario Kart at home for the next 6 months…

It's fine. Lot's of fun nods to the fans, including some scenes with visual and audio cues to the games. It's dragged down by the layers of playing it safe, which is depressingly working judging by the box office. Seriously, is there a playlist of "thunderingly obvious songs to play in a scene"? Because this film rattles through them.

An endless parade of easter eggs designed to distract from the fact that there is absolutely nothing going on in this movie. A true triumph in crass commercialism sustained by recognizable IP and literally nothing else.

Pretty cynical feeling brand exercise with some admittedly gorgeous renders and art depicting all the fun Nintendo stuff. The issues are the lifeless dialogue, having nothing of its own to say and the most cookie cutter kids movie plot I've seen in some time. Would be hard to recommend to anyone over 11 years old. I'm coming down harshly on this one but even though I'm sure they worked hard on it, this film feels wholly inessential.

A great voice cast but, as much a video gamer and old school Nintendo fan as I am, I have to admit this movie was pretty boring. Mario seems superfluous in the story, too. Couldn't Princess Peach and Donkey Kong taken care of Bowser? They both seem way more competent and just needed the invincibility star ...

Does The Super Mario Bros. Movie entertain Nintendo die-hards? Perhaps, and good for them. For me the film is a mixed bag of colourful environments, recognisable characters and a plot that feels like a cinematic rendition of gameplay complete with cut-scenes. The animation is good, but the story & dialogue is a tired string of clichés. Black was definitely the star of the film. Rogen & Armisen' Kong wasn't bad either, especially considering I find both actors irritating.

Nothing special, but I don't expect much story from Mario. This is mindless, by the numbers popcorn entertainment & I didn't anticipate much else. I am wary of its $$$ success because the bar is low. I also wish the humor & dialogue were better (and the needle drops suck). But my kids had fun. Voice cast has mixed results; Jack Black is the standout. On the plus side, the animation is sensational & the side-scrolling scenes & other interesting visual effects gave it a true video game feeling.

A fun computer game tie-in that kinda made me want to play some of the games again. My son (10) said this was the best film he’d seen this year. He loved it. I stayed awake and it held my attention. It had some charm. One for kids I reckon, but it won’t make grown ups wish they were dead.

Ok, I liked this a LOT more than I expected - I am a fan of Nintendo who has been disappointed before. One negative review I heard on the radio said this: "I feel like since I never seen any of the originating IP, I was basically left behind in a sea of noise and confusion." Uh... well... yeah. WHY would you go see this if you haven't played the games? I guess she was on assignment.

Beautifully animated, funny and packed with references. It's about the right length, has enough creativity and at times goes in surprising directions with the humour. The plot is pretty basic, but it doesn't need to be anything more than it is, similar to how the games are. I appreciated how sincere it was, there were no attempts at self-aware, scoffy humour. Not sure what the critics are missing, it's a Mario film. It does what you'd expect, with enough surprises. ps Jack Black is great.

An extremely average movie with far too many obvious, excruciating needledrops and a paper-thin, generic story. But here’s the thing. It’s a Mario movie. It has lots of Mario things and Mario easter eggs. At the cinema! This coupled with a largely exceptional voice cast (Pratt is fine) and about 60% of the jokes landing meant that I still enjoyed myself and had a good time despite recognising it’s not really all that good. But fuck putting that many needledrops in when the score is this great.

Illumination is so creatively vacuous that instead of telling a story they told a cliffnotes summary of a story instead. The movie is still fun mostly because Mario music is great and the sheer novelty of seeing a Mario movie that isn't actively atrocious while capturing some of the kinetic fun of Mario games is enough to keep the sheeple like me entertained.

A bunch of fun action sequences, and little else, but that's ok. I'm loving the RT reviews that are disappointed by the lack of depth from a film adaptation of a game whose main character's only spoken dialog consists of 'itsa me', 'woohoo', and 'I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor'.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an animated film by Illumination, contrasts with its poorly-received 1993 live-action predecessor. Featuring Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, it follows a blockbuster formula, but its abundant game references and vibrant colors can be tiring. Despite occasional directorial flair, the film ultimately feels exhausting.

It seemed to be less of a story than a collection of events that reference Mario video games. There's a sequence based on Mario Kart. Is that cool? Mario wins a fight because a reference to Super Mario 3D World exists. Is that cool? The whole movie is that over and over again, "progressing" its story with video game references. If you don't care about the references you can't care about this movie. Likely, you shouldn't care about the movie even if you do get the references.

Plot’s simple as it gets and it treats its villains as jokes - if this wasn’t a “pilot” for what will presumably be a more extensive Nintendo film project (hopefully giving us Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby etc) I’d rate it lower. But its success teaches an important lesson: video game movies don’t have to reimagine lore and iconography for a hypothetical “mainstream audience,” just put the game world on the screen and millions of viewers will come. Nihilistic / suicidal Luma stole the show.

A helluva wonderful time at the movies. The plot is very basic, it may not even be all that good of a screenplay, but who plays Mario games for the script? Looked, felt and breathed just like the games I grew up playing. I didn’t think the pacing was an issue and 92-minute runtime was fine. Pratt wasn’t a bad choice for the lead either, but the rest of the cast was outstanding. Tyler’s score was great too. Cannot recommend it enough to Mario fans, average kids movie or not. Surprising funny too!

Affable, pleasant animated effort is fun for a while, and shows a desire to want to travel the more subversive path of THE LEGO MOVIE, but is ultimately content to sit on its laurels as a simplistic buddy comedy adventure film, with a scattering of deep dive references to the video game series (as a “fair weather” Mario follower, they meant little to me). Vocal performers are well cast, with Pratt, Day and Taylor-Joy finding an easy chemistry - and Black is always fun to watch (and listen to!)

It certainly looks faithful to the series, and the voice acting issue isn't really an issue. It implements familiar scenarios from the likes of Donkey Kong, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart, which is respectable for a video game adaptation, yet they're implemented at odds with being in a new medium, and leave the film in stasis. Along with being boring in that way, it's just very safe, hardly funny, and features action scenes with no weight, rules, or anything coherent. Waha!

Ahh, the nostalgia this brought back to me! brilliant. This made me think of my fond NES playing days of me as a 90s teen battling numerous levels on Super Mario Bros 3 mainly, indeed there are scenes depicted in very retro, 80s blocky pixel like detail, alongside the recognisable old fashioned sound effects. Most of the film features more contemporary CGI but as a Mario fan of the 90s, I enjoyed those throwbacks - I have happy memories of playing Donkey Kong on my NES and Mario Kart on my DS.

You really do have to be a fan of the games to get many of the eggs and references. The plot's not super deep, but it has the characters you know and love. Peach is a little too awesome given the, uh, climate we're in right now, but. Hey. Jack Black, while slightly inconsistent as Bowser is nonetheless awesome for most of it. Seth Rogen is also a strong show as Donkey Kong- surprising. My other thoughts might get too spoilery- decent. Didn't wow me but I liked it.

Excellent visual design that really confirms how much digital animation has improved over the years. The movement is seamless, and the colours pop right off the screen. A shame then that considerably less attention was paid elsewhere. While technically a superior film to the infamous 1993 live action version, it suffers from the same problem of flatlining into a series of endless chase sequences, and the voice work is hit and miss.

Finding a hard time faulting any takeaway on this because it really is quite bad, but it’s exceptional at doing what it’s supposed to do, which is tick Nintendo references off a list while being fast and colourful for kids. This is the corporate version of a beloved IP adapted for film. And on top of the shallow script, I’m most alarmed that it never once settles. This is breakneck pacing designed for an instant gratification world and no amount of existential humour can help.

Anyway, I would not call it a well-made movie; plot-wise it is a very average Illumination film. Decent, and honestly better than I was expecting, but lacking something that would push it to the "great" category for me. It still feels solidly like a kids movie, as opposed to something like the recent Puss In Boots Last Wish, which I think is well-written enough to just be a great movie, regardless of age. They need to take time to set up a sensible world and get all of the characters into it, so it feels a bit rushed at times, and doesn't leave much room for development.

Nintendo really got boned releasing this movie the same year as Mattel's "Barbie" juggernaut. There's little redeeming about the voice-acting, animation, plot, characterizations, or fan-service going on here. In this day and age, nostalgia IP is king, so even if the movie is squarely for the kids market (no one in Gen Alpha grew up w/ Mario and Luigi; they don't care), better effort in appealing to kids of ALL ages would have benefited proceedings greatly. Go watch Sonic instead. PSI: 70

The hero must actually prove their worth without being reduced to a Mary/Gary Sue and ace everything on the first try. COLORS. Stunning visuals, one of the most beautiful animations ever. Maybe I liked it because of the nostalgia.

Perhaps it's just that I had really low expectations, but I'm puzzled by all the negative reviews that this got. I thought it was fine ... an entertaining animated film. I have no real connection to this property. I never owned a Nintendo console and I don't really enjoy the kinds of games that featured Mario and his ilk. (I think the only one I ever played was "Donkey Kong".) So ... I didn't like it because of nostalgia or anything like that. It just seemed ... fine.

The good - the animation is bright and creative, the voice acting is effective, Jack Black gets to sing, and there are a few clever references to parts of the nostalgic video game. The bad - it's pretty paper thin and often feels like it's just doing enough to string together more video game references. None of the emotional pay-off is earned and the stakes never feel real. Kids will surely love it, but there isn't a lot there for adults.
