Perhaps the most accurate portrayal of what post-apocalyptic survival will actually entail. Unfortunately for angsty teens, there will be less hunger-gaming and maze-running and more sleeping with creepy loners for half-filled bowls of onion soup. UN-FUN FACT: the last time I pleasured myself into a planter filled with rich, nutty loam, no beans sprouted. I must've been doing it wrong.

A man surviving alone in the woods following the collapse of society and a drastic population decline finds his routine upset by the arrival of two women at his shack. With wonderfully emotive acting supported by barely any dialog, this film is brutal, smart and very sparse...which makes any discussion of it difficult without delving into massive spoilers. Just know that if you enjoy independent movies and/or post-apocalyptic scenarios, it's definitely worth watching.

One of the more thought out post apocalyptic indie films made in 2015. The mild tension between the trio kept the slow moving story interesting enough and it got visually enchanting thanks to Mia Goth's enigmatic presence. Not my favorite genre, but even for me The Survivalist (2015) was alright.

I'm a little surprised by the mediocre scores for this one. This was excellent in every way. Great acting, directing, editing, pacing, and dialogue. This movie gets right what most post-collapse movies get wrong. The main characters were likeable. The survival was realistic. They made smart, realistic decisions (in a genre where characters are usually unlikeable morons who make one stupid decision after another). I'm not sure what else I could ask for from a post-collapse survival movie.

A thorough de-glamorization of post-apocalypse romances. Does not pull any punches in showcasing the cruelty, paranoia, and desperation of a life beyond the structures of the social order.

Slow burn done well. Some really harsh realities of a societal collapse done pretty well. Some really nice shots. Some of the motivations didn't really hit home for me.

this film is uncannily like that time when the online food shop didn't arrive and I killed everyone in the house and buried them in the back garden as there obviously wasn't enough food left in the fridge to feed us all

I wasn't expecting to watch a dude jerk off into a flower bed today, but here we are. Then I turned the movie on.

Well acted and very realistic. But it was pretty slow and boring at points.

I do not understand why people like that one that much, it is just boring. You wait and wait in case something happens, but nothing in the end.

The Survivalist is a film that is better at creating a tone than it is at an interesting plot or characters. McCann and Goth do a good job of conveying the physical and mental toil that their post-apocalyptic world has taken, but their emotional distance is tiresome to watch, especially with the long silent interludes. Essentially, I just didn't like the gritty, unrelenting setting that character lived in and how the film posits the pessimistic future for humanity.

Mixed feelings about this one. Liked the survival aspect of it and the whole thing where you don't know if you can trust someone (after the collapse of civilization) and it might be better just to stick to remaining away from other people. It is a slow movie with not much dialogue happening and that works best for this kind of plot. I just felt like in the end I didn't get much out of it. Liked some of the plot decisions and the ending was okay, but overall just a big meh feeling here.
