It's a better book than a film although it might honestly be as good an adaptation as Purple Noon. It's aged only slightly poorly because not even Jude Law fantasizes about being Jude Law anymore.

The main issue is the unlikability of Tom Ripley. Normally, I would never use this as a criticism of any film, but when the film runs over two hours, and Tom Ripley is in every scene, the film just starts to suffer in the last hour due to a repetitive cycle: Ripley makes a mistake, Ripley is almost found out, Ripley does something drastic, Ripley is in the clear. This cycle begins to repeat itself and drags the film down.

I mean, I guess he's pretty talented. I have been confusing this with Teaching Mrs. Tingle my entire life.

Great acting and some seriously intense scenes. The first half is an amazing setup. Later on, Damon - in his best performance - struggles, as his character fights not to get caught, to keep the movie interesting, and he succeeds.

the fact that matt damon doesn't look like jude law at all hurts the movie. also the fact that it is 30 minutes too long and too slow-paced for a thriller.

Dark and creepy. There are a few slow moments and the ending wasn't completely satisfying to me, but overall this is a very impressive movie.

It's acted and directed and especially written well, but the story itself I have to take issue with. The film keeps trying to humanize Ripley while he's still doing all these terrible things, and by the end it's impossible to have any connect with the character. Ultimately it's depressing and disturbing with no real outlet for understanding, and so I can't say I enjoyed it much.

A creepy performance by Damon makes this hard to admit liking. But excellent work from Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, (looking particularly stunning) in this extremely well photographed Mediterannean tale...

Early proof that Damon had the goods. A great portrait of a twisted character.

Suprisingly good performance by Damon. Law is a genuine ashole. (In a good way)

More thanks to great acting and beautiful surroundings as well as some mesmerizing scenes, rather than to a coherent and functional plot, The Talenter Mr. Ripley is a great film definitely worth watching. Matt Damon's career's definite high point.

An incredibly calculated and brilliant thriller interpersed with brutality. It starts out slow, but as it escalates it increasingly grows dark and dramatic as Ripley frantically searches for a way to hide his lies. Damon is chillingly great and psychopathic, the absolute high point of his career.

Polished thriller than leaves you completely satisfied. Everyone brings their A game and it adds to the enjoyment ten fold. Changes pace after about an hour but never does it bore as it holds your attention the whole time and includes a fantastic ending. Could easily watch it again right away.

Unbelievably creepy, this movie made me feel awkward and uneasy the entire time. Terrific performance from Damon though.
