It's a better book than a film although it might honestly be as good an adaptation as Purple Noon. It's aged only slightly poorly because not even Jude Law fantasizes about being Jude Law anymore.

Great acting and some seriously intense scenes. The first half is an amazing setup. Later on, Damon - in his best performance - struggles, as his character fights not to get caught, to keep the movie interesting, and he succeeds.

the fact that matt damon doesn't look like jude law at all hurts the movie. also the fact that it is 30 minutes too long and too slow-paced for a thriller.

The main issue is the unlikability of Tom Ripley. Normally, I would never use this as a criticism of any film, but when the film runs over two hours, and Tom Ripley is in every scene, the film just starts to suffer in the last hour due to a repetitive cycle: Ripley makes a mistake, Ripley is almost found out, Ripley does something drastic, Ripley is in the clear. This cycle begins to repeat itself and drags the film down.

Wow, Matt Damon can really pull off the psychopath role. Takes a while to get to where it's going, but after that it's a pretty good thriller. Every time there's bloodshed it gets pretty brutal.

It's acted and directed and especially written well, but the story itself I have to take issue with. The film keeps trying to humanize Ripley while he's still doing all these terrible things, and by the end it's impossible to have any connect with the character. Ultimately it's depressing and disturbing with no real outlet for understanding, and so I can't say I enjoyed it much.

An incredibly calculated and brilliant thriller interpersed with brutality. It starts out slow, but as it escalates it increasingly grows dark and dramatic as Ripley frantically searches for a way to hide his lies. Damon is chillingly great and psychopathic, the absolute high point of his career.

This movie is definitely a slow burner, but thanks to a spectacular cast and intriguing setting it manages to be highly entertaining. Minghella does a superb job of creating the tension which binds the sometimes meandering plot together. The movie felt like it could have easily taken a rather conventional turn, but one has to give it credit for ultimately staying true to its ambiguous highbrow nature.

Every time I watch this movie I like it more. First off it has an incredible ensemble cast, one of the best I've ever seen; Philip Seymour Hoffman is perfect, Matt Damon and Jude Law give the best performances of their careers and Jack Davenport is great, Cate Blanchett fills her small role with so much we never see from her playing against her usual type and Gwyneth Paltrow, who I usually can't stand, does exactly what she needs to. And I've run out of room before getting to Minghella

Director/writer pays attention in details and mimic in great deal here and that is always a good thing in movies. Majority of the actors do they job good, excluding Paltrow. The first one hour is pretty lame and it lowers points, but the latter part thickens tension till the perfect ending. Looking forewards to see the original French flick, Plein soleil, with Alain Delon, because the story itself is excellent.

Tom Ripley is a young man struggling to make a living in New York City by whatever means necessary, including a series of small-time confidence scams. One day, he is approached by shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf to travel to Italy to persuade Greenleaf's errant son, Dickie, to return to the United States and join the family business. Ripley agrees, exaggerating his friendship with Dickie, a half-remembered acquaintance, in order to gain the elder Greenleaf's trust. Shortly after his arriva

In going on too long it makes Ripley's successes seem gradually less plausible, and it's very awkward at the beginning in its attempts to be light and carefree before everything turns dark and tense. But when it makes that turn I think it works quite well for just about the entire second act, so it deserves credit for that. Despite its flaws it's never unpleasant to watch.

The first hour is excellent, but the film drops off after Jude Law exits. Tom almost getting caught before bumbling his way out of it simply wasn't as interesting as his obsession with Dickie. The scene on the boat felt like an incredible scene to end the film, but it wasn't; it just ended the first act. I don't know if there's a way to structure the story so it ends there, but I think it would have been great.

A surprisingly great and slightly disturbing thriller, mainly thanks to the chillingly calm and calculating psychopath played by Matt Damon. Although the plotline sometimes feels slightly patchy and the script has a number of small holes, these go by relatively unnoticed thanks to a long stream of interconnected and equally gripping scenes interspersed with the odd act of increasingly desperate brutality as the whirlwind of lies gradually escalates around frantic yet outwardly collected Ripley.

Subtly masterful acting, even from (in my book) disputable names like Law and Paltrow. I liked the direction too despite pacing problems. However, the added characters to the story and the broadened scope makes it a bit unfocused at times. Good conclusion though, and definitely a good old-fashioned calm thriller.

A luxurious period piece backed up with some fantastic performances, if a little too broad and murder-mystery style. The movie does feel overlong, but I'm not sure what sequences could be shortened or cut to alleviate the pacing issues.

After a string of successful films that brought him into the limelight, Matt Damon takes a 180 degree turn and decides to shows us the darkness of the human heart instead of his more usual good guy with issues role. Tom Ripley just happens to be a nice guy that borrowed a jacket at the wrong place at the wrong time. This decision changes his life forever leading him to many transformations, deceit, violence, and all for the price of self-discovery. On a side note, the cinematography is superb.

Compellingly uncomfortable. Each scene is filled to the rim with uneasy tension as the seemingly (em)pathetic Ripley is weaved into his own web of lies. Law, Hoffman and Paltrow steal the show, but upon repeat viewing, it's Matt Damon who ties this movie together. His charm and vulnerability helped along by a brilliant script, is so successful in deceiving the audience, that it is not up until the very end, we realise exactly what Tom Ripley is. Easily the great, late Minghella's best film.
