Having lost his horse in a bet, Pat Brennan hitches a ride with a stagecoach carrying newlyweds, Willard and Doretta Mims. At the next station the coach and its passengers fall into the hands of a trio of outlaws headed by a man named Usher. When Usher learns that Doretta is the daughter of a rich copper-mine owner, he decides to hold her for ransom. Tension build over the next 24 hours as Usher awaits a response to his demands and as a romantic attachment grows between Brennan and Doretta. (imdb)

Scott is that cool uncle everyone likes. Boone despite being the hero on television was pretty excellent at playing bad guys you loved to hate. The two clash in this classic western.

A simple story that is done very well and with an enthusiastic cast. Randolph Scott is stoic but with enough humanity to connect with. It is a very tight narrative at under 80 minutes and with fairly dark plot turns. Solid.

After a deceptively meandering first 20 minutes, the film's focus narrows and its comedy wanes. Instead, we are treated to a sharp standoff between hero and villain. The film complicates these characters by inverting certain qualities (villain keeps hero alive vs. hero kills villain; villains leave woman alone vs. hero takes her as his own), and with the tension of the story, we get a sharply written and filmed (if not particularly well-acted) morality tale where good and evil are mixed together

Really gets going once they get to the stagecoach. Short runtime but good tight character interactions. Fav scene: bad guy trying to convince good guy to go with him---I really enjoyed their mutual respect for each other.

Perhaps the simple virtues of Boetticher's style have been overstated by auteurists, but at the same time, there is a smooth flowing motion to the way scenes are sequenced, and Scott has a great screen presence, even if he isn't necessarily a great actor. The characterisations are a shade darker than standard westerns of its era, and the archetypes are subtly subverted as regularly as they are affirmed. It's a shame then that the first 20 minutes are poorly paced and full of cornball humour.
