The Tango Lesson

The photography is really nice and the overall mood is warm and appealing. There's a few very well-made dancing scenes too; I did feel though that there were too many of them - and little story in comparison. Quiet romantic dramas may not require the most mind-blowing plot but good characters are still needed. When towards the end the two protagonists get to talk a bit more about themselves and each other it's a stark contrast to the schematic meta meditation on tango and film that came before.

A deeply self-indulgent and pretentious waste of time.

This isn't really a movie for me - it's more a record of the development of a certain approach to dancing tango. Catches Naveira and Salas just after the very peak of their innovations -- I really have to find out how Potter caught them at this moment. The only thing that strikes me as strange is that Veron is the lead - he may be sexy, but as a dancer, he just doesn't measure up to the other two, at least in my mind.

self-indulgent and probably semi-autobiographical film in which our writer-director, sally potter, indulges in the art of dance, perhaps as a cure for writer's block, but maybe also to get a taste of the stardom of acting. during her time with her dancing partner, she decides to make a film about tango - which is this film, starring herself, fulfilling that need for recognition. filled with gorgeous sound, picture and dance, but it ultimately rings hollow, in part because of its tepid romance.

Beautifully put together, lovely to watch - the shifting balance of power between the 2 leads was interesting otherwise the story was quite empty.
