It starts out fairly amusing, but as it goes on gets more and more annoying with its characterisations, unfunny and immature with its humour and downright tedious in its attempts to provoke. The appeal is lost on me completely...

I get the cult status of this movie but it really wasn't for me. Not thought-provoking enough despite the imagery. Alice's quest to find John Smith was interesting, but it doesn't really amount to much more than long monologues. Fav scene: "position 72!" as naked women dogpile on a guy.

I expect it's too vulgar for the arthouse crowd and too restrained for those seeking something more lurid. But if you're willing to meet this film on its terms, you'll find a beautifully shot and fascinatingly surreal study of obscenity that, despite being primarily constructed out of dialog, always finds an unexpected corner of the pervert's mind to explore next.
