If you've seen the original or (sigh) the remake, you may have wondered where Leatherface came from, what drives him to chase people with a chainsaw, why his face is all effed up like that. And guess what: The prequel doesn’t tell you much. Turns out he was born deformed and vaguely retarded, was raised by a normal-seeming family, and then started killing people when the slaughterhouse he worked in got closed down by the health department. End of backstory.

Good movie Nice follow up to the remake we get to find out more about Leather Face and his families background Good kills honestly I can’t find anything to complain about with this movie

Why do movies still use the "killer is hiding in the back seat" trope?? It doesn't make any sense. Like you're not going to see a 6'8", 300 lb behemoth with a giant chainsaw sitting in the back seat as you get in the car? Nice effort, but ultimately forgettable.

the film did make me scared from seeing the gore, the cannibalism, and the torture, and along with great acting this movie felt all to real to me. More so then its predecessor. For its ability to make someone believe that it is real and believe that there are really sick people out there that do this sort of thing was enough for me to enjoy it as a scary intense horror film.

Might be in the minority here, but I actually enjoy this quite a bit. I think it’s quite dreadful, it uses it’s gore really well visually, and I love me some Jordana Brewster. This might not be the easiest to stomach, and I know that’s not always a positive, but it really doesn’t try and be something more than it sets out to be. However, I will say, outside a 5 minute prologue, there isn’t anything that really gives depth or background to Leatherface. I find this interesting regardless.

"Reducing the iconic brute to a victim of childhood neglect and abuse? That's not, as The Beginning's tagline boasts, "The Birth of Fear." It's the death of it." - Nick Schager

Was too over the top at times, and failed to become more than a simplistic gore fest. Still REA's savage, funny performance is almost worth the price of admission.

While it's true that being a prequel to the 2003 remake destroys pretty much any suspense as to who'll live & die & nobody cared enough about the new crazies to care about their origin & it panders w/ yet another dinner table scene, these kinds of problems never seem to bother slasher fans other times. The technical stuff & acting is still all above average & the victims are actually distinctive characters who aren't dumb! If not for the unavoidable (?) lack of suspense, I would have loved this

Lots more R. Lee Ermey and kind of an origin story, which was interesting. Lots of blood in this one.

A sloppy movie compared to the 2003 remake. Enjoyed watching most of it though.. Was cool seeing how leatherface got the way he is, though they still didnt really explain a lot, which makes the movie pretty pointless as a prologue..

Not as bad as expected; even taking into account the complete neutering of Leatherface. Not enough respect is given to how scary R. Lee Ermey is here.

With a promising trailer and a decent cast i thought this movie had the potential to be totally awesome. But the movie is almost exactly the same as its predecessor, only with one or two new things going for it ( and they kinda suck) . The intro is nice, but it all goes down hill from there , and it ends up as a jus below average TCM. Too bad the "beginning" was a step down, it could have been so much.

While Bay's first attempt at the TCM was pretty okay, this one really ruined his streak. R. Lee Ermey was still great for his role and quite terrifying, but besides destroying anything interesting about Leatherface, this sequel really just loses any respect in its acting, direction, and scares. It's not subtly or in your face scary. At all. Not good.

This was as good if not better than most of the movies in this over rated series. You have a crazy family and a cast of semi likable victims, now let the mayhem begin. The thing that is wrong here much like the things that are wrong with most of the films in this series is the fact that most of the characters in the film have multiple chances to escape and or fight back/kill the members of the murderous family but choose not to do so.

Unrated Cut plays like Ultimate XP in Torture Porn. Barely a true character here, because the beginning and ending are both so rushed you can't actually tell who these people are. I kinda like how Brewster mirrors Biel character from the first film, though. Mythology sucks, because there isn't even (a bad or good) origin story. Gore fest is disgusting, nasty and all, but doesn't bring any tension to the table, because Liebesman shoots everything in this handicam, sepia-colored, mid-closeup frame

The Beginning certainly isn't the worst film in the franchise. Some of the great acting carries over from the first film. Sadly, it suffers from an overreliance on brutality without much of a point to carry us through.

Origin stories are usually a bit useless and I never liked that in horror when evil villains are given backgrounds that somehow try to justify the way they turned out. This one has some decent moods and some pretty good gore, but it just doesn't add anything new to the franchise. You know what is going to happen, that the killer is going to pop out at X moment, that the family supper is a little bit different and definitely not vegan.

The vietnam backstory added a little tiny bit of personality to the characters, even if one knows it never ends well for the characters in such movie.

I wasn't a fan of the remake, but this is better than it. Don't take that as a compliment though, this film is the definition of a one-dimensional piece and there's nothing to it at all. Models turned actors get killed and very small bits of gross out scenes flesh out the rest of it. Nothing worth checking out.

Keeps the same gritty feel as the original remake, with a new amped up story. A fitting sequel, but by no means surpasses its predecessor.

Missing a key element of a horror movie: scares. And since they got a lot of the same cast members from the remake with Jessica Biel there's no real threat of them ever breaking free and if they do you know that nigga is just gonna catch them and steal face. It also needed Diora Baird to show those perfect tits, truly a missed opportunity.
