Slightly wussier version of "Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia", but Tommy Lee Jones gives an excellent performance.

Thank god for films like this. Tommy Lee Jones really impressed me here.. Fantastic cinematography. Just a beautiful film on all counts. It doesn't necessarily stand out, but it's wonderful in it's subtlety.

A sentimental story with some beautiful scenery, it's an alright story from the sentimentalness but there's not *that* much going on plot-wise, and the mystery leaves something to be desired.

Does the connected lives, determined morality, and coincidental events that Alejandro Gonzalez does, but Arriaga does 'em better.

A good movie with some very intense moments and flashes of greatness, but it doesn't really get there. The convoluted set up is unnecessary and the whole thing feels unfocused, as if Jones has a good story and something to say with it, but can't quite fit the two together. It's still worth watching as long as your expectations aren't too high.

This movie has multiple interpretations. Basically it's a multi leveled growing up story. For different kinds of things. But especially for growing up to see more further. To see behind the curtain. A very strong anti-rasistic story. It's a road movie for human soul. Like the blind man said I haven't seen anything in years. Strong directing and acting along the way.

Kinda contrived at times (the donkey falling off the cliff was just silly, and Arriaga is as self-satisfied as always), and Pepper isn't great, but Jones has a light touch as director, and the camera is beautiful.

TLJ seems to handle Arriaga better than Inarritu, even after all that practice. The stories are interwoven better, the photography is just as good, and the world is realerer (even if the romanticism of the settings seems a little strong. I mean if I believed TX is really like this I would move there in a second.)

Although it is made in a generally competent manner, and the results prove quite atmospheric, it is also rather contrived, artificial, and preachy, in ways which detract from the effectiveness of the overall experience.

As a debut feature, Tommy Lee Jones's first turn in the director's chair is a gritty and touching surprise. Sure it's a bit slow, but what western isn't? This is a movie that grows on you more and more retrospectively, and its landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful. The screenplay jumps around a bit chronologically, but that's to be expected from the writer of 21 Grams. Very good; just shy of great.

Pretty good. I think the main character is a little forced, but that's really just a minor nitpick. I liked the mirroring of scenes of the blind American listening to Mexican radio he doesn't understand, and the Mexicans watching American television they don't understand. Also the double-meaning of the title is nifty and leaves something open to interpretation. Good job, Tommy Lee Jones.

The non linear narrative at the start was a little confusing to start with but overall a solid modern Western about a journey to redemption(the Western) and self discovery (the modern bit)

I enjoyed this movie very much, from the way it played with the timeline at the beginning, to the beautiful performances by Barry Pepper and Tommy Lee Jones and the often breath-taking cinematography. It's the story of a terrible accident, and the act of redemption that it entails. Highly recommended.

the settings of rural bordertown misery versus the mindblowingly vast nature (both depicted impeccably) are the perfect fit for this journey out of narrow-mindedness into a broadened view of variety and circumstance. there's a story to everything, even if one doesn't know or care for it. fuck prison, this is exactly what every ignorant retard who ever killed or mistreated another person should have to go through.

Don't let the ponderous title fool you. Tommy Lee Jones filmed this in his backyard, and keeps things moving. My only real complaint is that, as a character, Melquiades Estrada is given very little real personality. He's just a nice guy who gets shot, which doesn't seem to justify all those scenes with him in flashback.

The directorial debut of Jones, but the filmmaker whose fingerprints are all over it is screenwriter Arriaga. Like his overwrought collaborations with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, this film plays around with non-linear storytelling to no discernible dramatic effect and is so enamored with its own bleakness that it becomes a humorless chore. Jones shoots his beloved Texas landscapes with a fine eye for stark beauty, but the film moves as slowly as the scorching sun across the vast summer sky.
