Well, the writer definitely saw "Heat" like a million times. So the story isn't that new. And Affleck as an actor...let's not get into this... But Affleck as a director is another story. His direction (and Jeremy Renner's performance) make this above all a solid action film/thriller. PS.: And I have to admit I kinda like Boston...

Obviously, Affleck wants to depict the brutal life of Charlestown in the name of credibility and concerning the overall millieu and most characters, he succeeds. His own fairy tale character (the bank robber with a heart of gold), however, seems out of place. Too easily he escapes his own social heritage and instead of becoming interesting action with social commentary, the film merely turns into a simple action fairy tale. But a thrilling and exciting one, that is.

Ben Afflecks proves he is the next big filmmaker, and he even proves that he can still act. This film was awesome. The plot was engaging, the action sequences were beyond top notch. I want this guy to direct the adaptation of Dennis Lehanes "The Given Day" which is set in Boston. The entire cast was awesome, Renner and Hall being the standouts. Hamm also does a great job with his role and even Blake Lively is excellent. She has some talent and proves that in this film. Great film.

Maybe I expected too much from this film. I loved Gone Baby Gone. This one was just alright for me. I must say though that Affleck does a competent job directing it and it only reaffirms that his previous directing effort was no fluke. I believe the problem lies mainly with the source material. It's just not good enough. In its own right, it's a decent crime drama. It does have some fairly entertaining moments and a great presence from Renner. So there's that.

"Heat"-esque seems an understatement. However, despite all the cliches and contraptions - or perhaps because of them - Affleck crafts a pacy, racy and only slightly dumbed down version of Mann's masterpiece. Remember that line from "Heat"? "Don't get attached to anything you can't walk away from in less than 30 seconds." "The Town" surveys similar fertile cops and robbers land, but never really digs deep. It's good. It could have been great. Renner is mesmerizing and the sound (editing) superb.

Affleck is walking on the right side, but he is still like a "half"; right sentences, right stories, but they are also missing in terms of meaning. I think problem is in the form of the storytelling. But as I said in the begining, he is in the right town, a better point is he is still growing...

The Town won't earn any points for originality with its cops-and-robbers plot (strongly reminiscent of Heat in particular), but it more than makes up for it with compelling characters (and an outstanding performance by Jeremy Renner) and superb direction from Affleck, who has certainly found a new calling. Features some heart-poundingly intense action sequences and fresh spins on old cliches. Well worth a look.

Who would've guessed Ben Affleck would be a director to watch 15 years ago? He seems to be the real deal. The cast is seriously excellent and it's nice to see Jon Hamm finally starting to get some roles that are worthy of him. My biggest problem with the film was the ending, which is just anti climatic and kind of a let down but otherwise one of the most solid and enjoyable films I've seen all year.

Affleck has come into his own as a director, with obvious influence from Scorsese. While the love story feels a bit forced, it doesn't distract too much from a great heist film. Affleck's character is the "criminal with a conscience," a tragic hero who is struggling with making a change in his ways. The camera-work, car chases and shoot-outs rival 'Heat' for some of the best I've seen in a crime drama. Though the ending could be called a little too "neat" by some, I personally felt satisfied.

Technically well-made, with some really good, tense sequences. But the human elements are mostly irritating, especially Affleck's reluctant criminal superhero (squeaky clean, just robs banks cuz he has to) and his gag-inducing romance (apparently a good relationship is built on over-sharing about traumatic experiences). And the FBI are so clearly framed as the villains whose bumbling attempts at stopping the heroes you're supposed to shake your fist at, it got a little embarrassing by the end.

Well, it's above average, no doubt. And stating the obvious, I'd like to add: Ben Affleck is not a very talented actor as is his brother. He is a talented director, though. Scriptwise: lets just believe for a sec that he didn't write that I'd-rather-have-my-kneecaps-blown-off-than-have-to-watch-that-abysmal-shit-again ending. Good casting, with Pete Postletelteltelwaith and Ch. Cooper in sweet-ass supporting parts, and a nice film overall, that hands you a little piece of Boston in some style.

I agree with everyone else (most people, anyway): Affleck's direction is stronger than the material. But who cares if we've seen 'Heat' when the execution and the performances are top-notch. Renner, in particular, shines and Rebecca Hall is once again thoroughly convincing. I loved the suspenseful tattoo-scene between those two and Affleck. Hamm was great. So was the action. Oh... and by the way, because it's seems to be a prerequisite for reviewing this movie, I'll just briefly mention Boston.

A really well-made crime drama until the end - which asks viewers to keep sympathizing w/ a "changed" criminal who is still shooting (& killing? Affleck manipulatively leaves that vague) at cops in the climactic shootout. The law-abiding love interest who would almost certainly dump his ass contrivedly has no friends or family since she exists only to romanticize him further. Affleck's decision to dedicate the film to law-abiding Irish people after ennobling a likely cop(s) killer is absurd.

Yes, it's familiar, but most heist/action movies are. It's the fleshing out of the genre skeleton that sets the good ones apart, and that's where Affleck does a fair job. Can't say I wasn't entertained. Also, bonus points for channeling The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

A technically proficient movie, with some very good set pieces, but unfortunately there's just so much bullshit in between everything. I found it hard to care about any of the characters. Good acting does little towards making them more compelling. The plot is at times generic and predictable. The relationship between Affleck and Hall is unbelievable. Why she gave him a second chance is beyond me. On top of everything the middle really drags. That said the crime scenes are very well executed.

You can tell Affleck went for a somewhat modernised version of Heat, but it never reaches the level of Mann's classic. Gritty, action-packed, intense, exciting, beautifully-acted, impressively-shot. Ben Affleck, reinventing himself superbly, has directed two sensational films in a row, and 'The Town' easily plays in the same league as 'Departed' and 'Heat.' What more can be said? The movie is thoroughly engrossing, both as a band-of-thieves thriller, and a detective drama. The fact that Affleck bests Mann's recent 'Public Enemies' and Ridley Scott's 'American Gangster' is quite the feat.

WTF How do so many people like this movie??? Affleck saw Heat and decided to make a lame cliched ripoff drawing upon his personal experiences growing up with a bunch of scumbag Townies in South Boston. The heavy handed dramatic pacing just made it all the more ridiculous. I grew up in South Boston and escaped the first chance I got. So the romanticizing of Boston low lifes just makes me cringe...

Great caper movie, pretty lousy love story, this 'Heat' pastiché with a hint of 'Traffic', doesn't do anything criminally wrong, but the Stockholm syndrome relationship is problematic. So too Affleck on screen, which comes off as "Affleck - serious actor!" more than anything else ('My mother left me!'). It's biggest force, however, is Affleck behind the camera. The dude can direct. Also Hall is adorable (an adorable banker?! Food for thought!), and what's this?! Postlethwaite as Irish?! OI!

Pretty decent crime drama. It rehashes a few old standards, but the heists themselves are pretty original. Gone Baby Gone was no fluke - Affleck is a filmmaker, and a damn good one. It remains to be seen whether he can work outside the very specific subgenre of Boston crime dramas, but here he delivers muscular, engaging cops 'n' robbers pulp. I'm not yet convinced he's a great actor (even less so Blake Lively, who comes across like a child playing dress-up), but I really liked Jom Hamm and Rebecca Hall, and Jeremy Renner is just awesome.

Pretty much entirely derivative of heat and self aware of that fact with a clip inserted of the movie (on a tv) about 1/4 of the way through. I like to think of this as a present day re-imagination of the same story but with none of the same dramatic weight or acting credibility. It seems like the ending was forced with weak romantic sentimentality. There are some good technical scenes involving the firefights but these all seem obligatory given the material and obvious inspiration.

BA is a good director, but not a very good actor, he's proven both by now. The action scenes are well executed, but it is the fill-in scenes that becomes to long and simply to dull. I was only waiting for more bank robberys and couldn't care less about the characters. Except Renner though who shows that Hurt Locker wasn't a one hit wonder. This gritty, well-made tale of a robbers gang in Boston is nothing terribly inspired -just a genre picture done damn right. Ben Affleck emerges as a director much better than he ever was an actor (and his tepid performance here is one of the factors bogging the film down) and, in "The Town", he gets to work with a finely written script that focuses on both character development and suspenseful heist sequences. The Town has good actors who do things we don't care about. The focal point of the film is a love story between the two lead characters, but it's not believable or worth caring about. The actual heists, when characters perform robberies involving a lot of money, are fun and exciting, but they don't happen often enough, or are not built up enough to make the film worth watching. It's not a bad film, but it's just not one that's all that good. It's there, it functions and that's about it.

Affleck and Renner play two badasses with delicate Boston accents in a very forgettable but enjoyable-while-it-lasts flick. Seeing Renner in a different light, playing a fundamentally different character to, say, Hawkeye, was intriguing and does laud the actor a lot. Affleck was almost his usual suave self - and more pronounced even - and the Boston accent really helped. Apart form that, albeit an enjoyable film, as mentioned already, suffers from being very unmemorable.

Engrossing crime drama, masterfully constructed by Affleck, also proves himself to be an excellent action director with a couple of first rate action scenes. He also turns in a sterling performance along with a first-rate cast, highlighted by an off-kilter performance by Renner. Well-directed, but the script and especially the dialogue is pretty weak. Also Affleck should not have cast himself in the main role, plus Hamm and Lively (and to a lesser extent Lost-guy) are too connected right now to their television shows to really work for me (over time this will prolly not be an issue, since Hamm is a good actor and Lively was passable, but right now it took me out of the film). The bank heists themselves are more or less fun to watch, but the surrounding story is easy enough to predict and is based on a number of extraordinary conveniences. I can't imagine how the four hour cut would improve things.

Not as good as Gone Baby Gone, but still good. Affleck acting wasn't painful to watch here. He is also developing a definite style to his directing. Similarities in directorial choices between this and Gone Baby Gone are very prevalent. I was however slightly unhappy with the ending. Also best line in the whole film: "I have a question. I volunteer at a boy's and girl's club."

Really well constructed and thoroughly entertaining crime film. What it lacks in originality it makes up for in execution that kept me always looking forward to the next scene. The performances were all pretty good and effective. Some of the human drama could have been better handled but the heist and chase scenes are fantastic.
