The action scenes are enthralling if only to see what new absurd act of brutality will happen next, but the characters are too obnoxious to make me care about the satire. Fails to hit that necessary balance.

Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz gave rise to the notorious "Troma Entertainment"TM, by fueling it off the radioactive fumes emanating from the sleazy stacks of cash they made selling the origin story of New Jersey's favorite son, and official state mascot, "Toxie", "The Toxic Avenger". This cult-classic, over-the-top, violent, gory, exploitation, 80's camp is a must see for fans of "so-bad-it's-good" ridiculous schlock.

entertaining purely for funny non-comedic ways. the acting is intentionally so bad that it's humorous, and in places where it counts it even takes it's self seriously, for instance special effects, for being a low budget b-movie it is really not that bad looking.

A silly but altogether too boring movie to be worth seeing, The Toxic Avenger has a great deal of violence and sex but what fills the holes between either of these is nothing particularly interesting. The social conscience aspect only helps so much. This is B-movie schlock, and while it has moments where it shocks or surprises, it doesn't do enough to set itself apart or give us a reason to see it over any similar films. It'll appeal to some lovers of bad movies, but for most, it's not worth it.

As good as any exploitation film (that's meant as praise), the Toxic Avenger works perfectly well as a movie that ascends its modest nature by being self aware and really good fun. In fact as a super hero movie it is one of the best, surpassing with ease the long-winded and self indulgent Nolan Batman flicks.

(viewed on 01/09/15): The proverbial cash cow of Troma Studios, The Toxic Avenger is what put those proud purveyors of tasteless trash on the map, providing a brief crossover moment in the 1980s with cartoons and video games. It is not their best film--it isn't even the best Toxie film--but it earned its cult reputation on the back of a few memorable gross out scenes (head crushes and disembowelments mostly) and the jabs at the burgeoning fitness craze of the time are funny.

To give it its due, Toxic Avenger has some pretty fun scenes. A hot young cast and short scenes of the cheesiest possible dialogue keep things highly entertaining in the health club and the diner. Sadly it hasn't a clue about plot structure. As a revenge film, it blows through its victims in half an hour, and even though the Rocky-Horror-style romance subplot is cute, the stuff with the mayor is tiresome. All the filler takes the sheen off what was almost a classic of the genre.

As far as exploitation goes it hits the right marks. I just think that by not taking some of the acts of violence seriously it makes them seem poorly done. The whole kid thing was obviously in the movie to be exploitative, but the way the characters acted towards it just seemed extra, extra, extra trashy.

I truly thought I was prepared for my first Lloyd Kaufman movie. What a silly twit I was. It's essentially the most earnest B-movie wanna-be exploitation movie I've ever seen. There isn't a frame of this movie that is subtle. I never laughed because it was funny but I often laughed because of how ridiculous it all was. I was more fascinated with thinking about it's creation than the movie itself.

Hilarious gore-romp. Very gross but also very funny; nothing is sacred here as old ladies are beaten up, seeing eye dogs shot, and little kids squashed by cars. Way over the top but with an odd, endearing little charm all its own -- for those who can appreciate it. Followed by multiple sequels, this may be the only gore flick ever to inspire a TV cartoon series: "Toxic Crusaders!"

I understand what this film is and I don't mind the kind of "ultraviolence" on display here on principle, but a lot if not most of the violence in this film and the characters carrying it out is handled with such a misguided tone that it made me feel very uncomfortable. There's something wrong with a revenge movie when everything is this cold-blooded and psycopathic. It was memorable, I guess.

Made somewhere at the intersection between Frankenstein, grindhouse, and the '80s cultural obsession with the righteous nerd. It's one thing to call it campy, but it takes all the exploitation elements far, far beyond the extreme, past irreverent spoof and into frenzied, breathless cultural commentary. That it was so incisive about the environment in which is was made is, from the perspective of a time when social satire is so often limited to the nostalgic lens of hindsight, quite admirable.

This movie pulls out all the stops in its quest to be ridiculously and grotesquely bad. The editing, the acting, the horror, the humor, the sexploitation, this is truly all kinds of awful. In fact, it's quite possibly the most spectacularly awful movie I've seen, which makes it much more interesting and enjoyable than most of the superhero and monster movies that it emulates and crosses between.

It may well be that it’s a stylistic choice to lean into amateurish grotesquerie, but it doesn’t make this unappealing film any easier to digest – an ugly and overstated spin on FRANKENSTEIN, this is full of absolutely mystifying sequences and clumsy attempts at shock humour; even the performers who seem to be deliberately evoking campy cheese ultimately deliver legitimately poor and unconvincing performances. Ultimately too dull, tedious and one-note to catch fire.

The gore is fun and there is a handful of chuckle-worthy moments, but the rest sucks pretty bad whether it's a joke movie or not. Everyone is acting as obnoxiously and erratically as possible, complete with ridiculous, annoying dubbed sound effects, while the biggest part of the movie merely consists of the Toxic Avenger jumping from kill to kill with no regard for storytelling, except for the romance, which could have been something if it wasn't portraying Sara as dumb due to her blindness.

Your classic 80's coming of age film, what a foul creature man can become. Some severe editing and camera work problems attached with the frequent looping of the audio track make this technically a broken film. Then the non-actors, 3rd act dragging on and thrifty directing pull this together into a solid Swiss cheese block of a movie aimed to entertain us lowlifes with a ridiculous and violent script coupled with purposeful over-acting.

To actually enjoy this on any level you have to belong to two clubs: people who enjoy intentionally bad movies for their playful, comedic aspects, and people who enjoy over the top, masochistic violence. Finally got around to watching this one. It pretty much lived up to what I expected from it. A pretty fun slab of trashy midnight movie absurdity. I actually thought it was paced pretty well and didn't really drag like a lot of "so bad it's good" style movie tend to do. It was pretty entertaining throughout.
