The first Three-Strip Technicolor film done out in the wilderness. Wonderful finally seeing the color in the smile of one of my pet actresses during this time, Sylvia Sidney! She seemed to love being the nature girl and was the light whenever on screen! Good story of uneducated mountain folks who all they do is fight and kill because thats how they were brought up. A very solid film enhanced by the Technicolor experience!

Lots going on in this movie, there is a love triangle, a feud and people getting dragged into the modern world. Above average film with lots sadness and no easy answers.

In 1936 this already was the fifth cinematic adaptation to an apparantly former classic tale on industrialization transforming life in times way back when, something that would later form the basis for most westerns. As such, and combined with this also having contributed to forming the basis for shitty soaps like 'Little House on the Prairie', it being the first color-film outside, starring future stars Fonda and MacMurray, this might be of greater historical interest than is given credit for.
