The Transfiguration

The vampire as an allegory to a social outcast is nothing new, but O'Shea's film takes this pairing and runs to a much scarier place. Surrounded by people, Milo is alone and has fully accepted this. His attempts to explain and rationalize his loneliness, however, are terrifying. He is unable to accept that he is outsider due to his poverty, his tragic family dynamics, and his youth. What results brings the film into horror territory, but the people around Milo are just as horrific.

The Transfiguration is probably one of the weirder movies I've seen this year. A strange premise is done enough justice, but some of the acting involved isn't up to par with what the story needs. The monotonous main lead and his character arc are also very predictable and surprisingly shallow. It's an interesting watch, but this is definitely not one of the better horror films in recent memory.

A new perspective on the vampire genre is always welcome. This story is intimate, bloody, and all the more disturbing when teenagers are the subject matter.
