The Trouble with Being Born

The Trouble With Being Born has a concept that's thematically rich, but is left underwhelmed. It's stylistically my kind of thing, very brooding and menacing, but doesn't fulfill any further emotion from that. It languidly moves along in the second half, not building upon any themes in the first half, so the troubling aspects of androids being not quite human, yet not quite object are abandoned and hardly explored.

The Trouble with Being Born is a bleak, tedious affair that garners more interest from its controversy than from its substance. In all honesty, I probably missed large swathes of Wollner's subtext as I struggled to keep my eyes and ears open. The most unsettling aspect of the film is the uncanny valley of the facial CGI, shortly followed by the fact that the film ran for under 95 minutes. And to think I almost thought it was going to be a dark comedy when her papa calmly sighed, "not again".
