Not an expert in French, ? focused films. Maybe are better 1s (?) but I liked it | Total ? of film (+ in her head & life) is = 200% self-obsessed, bitchy witty Fabienne | CD = great & Binoche keeps pace 2 ??Hawke (tho fine) = irrelevant + film is 96%+ in French. USA star + 5 mins of English = marketing trick. Know what U will truly see: Slow paced, wryly amusing (not a LOL) comedy. Not much happens. Is study of mores & relationships in V French, V female film. As THAT: good

Koreeda seems completely absent and what's left is a standard drama - or less.

Had I not known that this was directed by Koreeda, I would not have guessed. It felt like a standard French drama, which is not a bad thing. It's largely built around Deneuve's persona who is provided strong support by Binoche. Hawke is mainly just hanging around as the husband of Binoche's character. I didn't think the scifi film framing brought anything extra to the film. Not bad, but a letdown considering all the talent involved.

Cultural difference is hard to translate. This would be a solid film if it didn't have the expectations of being a Koreeda film. His often emotional and nuanced film is instead replaced by a heavy dose of family drama. The performances are great and he still manages to draw out a terrific performance from a child actor. He also allows the dialogue to flow rather naturally between languages, but the ultimate issue with this is that it doesn't have the magic that usually accompanies his films.

It's hard to believe that a film directed by Kore-eda and starring starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche (and to a lesser extent Ethan Hawke) could be so bad. You feel almost embarrassed for anyone involved in making the film. The storyline is appealing enough, but the execution is so flat and lifeless. Not even Deneuve could breathe life into this cinematic snoozefest. And could Hawke please take off that damn hat and remove that smug look from his face.

Koreeda's works were often hit-or-miss for me, and it was (relatively) a hit this time. Nothing much happens yet it is absorbing. I should mention that it felt quite different from Koreeda's previous works on families, strangely.

Not playful enough with the scripted, non-scripted, real life, cinematic life -- one ages, the other is eternal -- that is supposed to forge mom-and-daughter's relationship and not emotionally resonant as you would expect from Koreeda. Competent, but totally bland family reunion dramedy. I would rather watch the sci-fi movie instead. Gotta love Hawke's silly character.

Kurgu facia. Çat diye saçma sapan bir sahne giriyor. Filmin sonunda, mutlu mesut bitiyor. Karakterime girdim, çıkamıyorum.

Kore-eda's first foreign language production is a successful family film with a fantastic cast led by the lengendary Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche.
