The Truth About Charlie

Demme's celebration of French Cinema has a few too many winks. Canted angle after canted angle, followed by an enormous amount of cheeky accordion pieces is too much to handle by the film's conclusion. Perhaps the film finds itself taking too many bad visual habits from 2002, maybe its Thandie Newton not quite ready for a leading role, or maybe it is Wahlberg wearing a beret (my god), but I'd much rather have Charade than this.

Charade didn't need to be remade. I feel that very strongly, especially after seeing The Truth About Charlie. The cast is weaker, the story feels more convoluted -- whether it is or not is up for debate -- and there's absolutely nothing thrilling about it. It's a remake without a purpose, and since you can see the original, the better version, for free, you're much better off doing that. It's a story of twists and turns but The Truth About Charlie would be better off if it didn't exist.

Someone remind me why they thought Mark Wahlberg could possibly do better than Cary Grant?

Rent Charade, the original version of this film - much better!

I don't mind pointless stories, but this one is just an empty enjoyment-charade; a non-engaging plot and mostly uninteresting characters - including a disastrous M.Wahlberg, from before he had developed more of his somewhat charm - so your Thandie-trance need to be tremendous to make this less horrendous. *Preview*: #13#, exp-2*, popcorn, story, director Demme/1, Thandie.N/6, (actors), R2.

Go watch to the original (Charade) instead.

This film just doesn't work. I think the first act is passable, but the film falls completely apart. Continuing the New Wave references, Demme shoots this in a very loose, hand-held style that really just serves to render any attempts at suspense completely ineffective. I don't know what Tim Robbins thinks he's doing in this film, but he's truly awful.

I like Matt Damon but not here.

I don't know how Mark Wahlberg could have been taken seriously enough to be given Shooter after this role. THE FILM SUCKED!

Strange... Feels like there was much more plot/runtime, which got cut out at random places. This way the script just seems retarded at times. And this whole vibe going back and forth from naive to "serious"...I guess...I don't know... But it had its cool moments/Demmeness. And cool costumes. And Thandie Newton. :> And her great performance. Can't help but find it a tiny bit awesome.
