The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part 1: The Moab Story
The first of three parts, we follow Tulse Luper in three distinct episodes: as a child during the first World War, as an explorer in Mormon Utah, and as a writer in Belgium during the rise of fascism. Packed with stylistic flourishes, it's a dense, comic study of 20th century history, revolving around the contents of one man's suitcases. (imdb)

More Greenaway weirdness. If you haven't seen any of his films you will be saying "wtf" and if you have, you'll find it doesn't really do much to distinguish itself from his other digital-era works. With so much going on its hard to get bored though.

Initially didn't catch me, but after a while it drew me in, so that I was saddened when it ended. The acting is awful.

Knowing Greenaway, everything in this film is done for very specific reasons. But it's all so elusive and dense with symbolism that it's impossible to decipher on a single viewing. It's so shattered by formalist clutter that it's difficult to say "what happens" except in vague terms. As is often the case with Greenaway, it holds little emotional resonance. But I found it fascinating nonetheless, original enough to hold my interest, and it does so with a unique and beautiful sense of style.

Kind of an essay film about other Greenaway films (among other things). Wildly ambitious and also ridiculously pretentious even by Greenaway's normal standards. It unfortunately lacks the visual beauty of his earlier films.
