The Turning

I liked some stories more than others. Rose Byrne gave a great performance, and Mia Wasikowska was very impressive with her directorial debut. Honestly though, I'd recommend just reading the book. The film is kind of paint-by-numbers, and doesn't really bring anything that the book doesn't already provide.

Some parts weaker than others of course, and it's hurt by the super-cereal, life-is-hard-and-I-must-furrow-my-brow-in-consternation tone endemic to Australian dramas. But I really dug the recurring motifs (car crashes, alcoholism, disfigurement) and their use and placement in the narrative, even if it's a bit deflating realising that most of the male characters are supposed to be the same guy. Makes me want to read the book, I'm sure that aspect is much more satisfying.
