(Rewatch: masterpiece) Fantastic and elevated by my knowledge of Canadian history, though I didn't expect them to go this far left field---the real WLMK was eccentric enough already. The sets are beautiful German expressionism art deco reminiscent of Metropolis. I wish we saw more of older sister Violet. Bert Harper and Ruby Elliott made a great team. Fav scenes: clubbing baby seals; Lord Muto delivering a rousing patriotic cry to defend Lady England as he overlooks citizens Wizard of Oz-style.

Matthew Rankin, seemingly indebted to his influences, gives the best tribute one can offer in this beautiful tale of Canadian history flipped over its head. If some of the faces were a little less modern, you could've told me this was shot in 1938 and I would've believed you; the attention to detail is perfect. Canadian movies are just on another level, I don't know what it is.
