While the spy subplot didn't work for me all the time, this was a fun romp that I could recommend to a lot of people, especially those who are familiar with Nicolas Cage's filmography. The tongue-in-cheek tone and the chemistry between Pedro Pascal and Cage is lovely, even if it does force me to suspend disbelief more than I prefer.

I had a blast! Action, comedy, male bonding. Loved it all. The only thing that kept it from reaching classic status in my mind is who is this "Nic Cage" they keep referring to?

Nicolas Cage can make any line work, and it's nice seeing him unhinged and also so meta. Like some others, I liked it a little more when they were chilling, but I'll still give it a 90 because 85 is too low. Legitimately funny and chaotic, interesting, creative. Great opening scene, along with other memorable scenes (Cage on acid, Cage arguing with himself/hitting himself/"Nic Cage smooches good" etc). Just endlessly entertaining, like Cage himself.

This is prime mid-2000's comedy crime flick a la Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or The Matador. The film's strengths lie in its meta comedy and the chemistry between Cage and Pedro Pascal. Its weaknesses are the rest of the script, the quality of which takes a nose-dive in the third act (ironically kicked off by a meta "so how do we end this" line), as well as the rest of the cast, an odd mishmash ranging from underused (Neil Patrick Harris) to distracting (Haddish and Barinholtz).

It was only a matter of time before Cage self-exaggeration becomes so inextricably tied to the man that he is portrayed as essentially not so-called super-acting (his words), or even acting, but just being himself on camera. And here he is playing himself. Yet the clear source of charm this movie has isn't from Cage, it's because of Pascal's childish fanboy character, and a seriously awesome story of unlikely friendship.

Though The Unbearable Weight seems a couple of rewrites away from the clever meta-comedy it aspires to be, the film exhibits welcome appreciation for the fullness of Cage as an actor and public figure, even if it’s mostly committed to paying off his silly side.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a clever concept in a dumb film that is more self-aware of Cage's career than it is of a well-executed plot. The bromance between Cage and Pascal was easily the best bit, shortly followed by Cage's ridiculous Cage-isms, Haddish & Brainholtz's CIA agents were my least favourite part. Overall a moderately entertaining if cheesy film.

As a massive Cage apologist who spends every July 14 watching Con Air with Mai Tais and pink coconut things this hit me with what’s left of the joy of being alive (https://youtu.be/iUwKgYliTic). The pacing is odd, the story doesn’t flow right, but the bromance between Pascal and Cage is the Lord's work, Jacob and the Angel, you know. God sees His Good Work and hears echoing out of the Depths, “Nicolas FUCCCKKKKINNNNNN CAGE!”

A clever conceit done impeccably, with just the right amount of meta narrative. The jokes are hugely funny, the friendship is enormously lovely, and there’s even a bit of fun action and some love for Paddington 2, which are just surplus in an equation that already gives an effective result: Pascal + Cage = Massively Bearable. Lots of fun.

Self-indulgent and - pardon the pun - massively inconsequential. There are hardly any stakes at all, so you're left watching Cage revisiting his past roles in a goofy and amusing rather than the outrageously unhinged way many of us have grown to love. Cage-light, if you will.

The plot was actually better than I expected, even if a lot of the beats were telegraphed. But this lives and dies on the relationship between Cage and Pascal, and that is really good. We've gotten a ton of post-modern comedy over the last decade and this still finds a way to feel fresh and fun.

This movie failed because it tried to make Nicholas Cage “relatable”. I hate the wife and the daughter, the sad “oh I’m poor :(“ and attempts at “depth”. Maybe I just hate him too much, but god, even though there where funny part, I suffered while watching. The clichés don’t stop being clichés just because you are aware of them, do something about it! Subvert it!

Lmao, this movie was great. Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal are hilarious across each other. So funny. The film is only let down by a third act ending that takes the action too seriously. Should have incorporated funnier moments into the action more often. Particularly missing on visual comedy. Not on the level of greatness of Hot Fuzz, but still pretty sick broooo

A massive waste of time and talent if you ask me. I get that it's on the nose and supposed to be stupid, but i'm noting down zero laughs and that's frugal for a 'comedy'. Special mention goes to the awful stock library music that kills any possibility of humor to begin with.

I guess I'm just not a huge Nic Cage fan. Not to say that I dislike him or anything. He was good enough here, its just I don't think I was engaged like a proper Nic Cage fan would have been. Pedro Pascal on the other hand is quickly becoming an actor to watch. This certainly had its moments, but I'm usually more of a meta commentary fan, and I felt like this mostly just had a weird tone. The switch to action/spy territory while not bad was also kind of just meh, whatever.

I am a fan of Nic Cage, mostly because he feels like the kind of an actor who just throws himself right into whatever role he decides to take and he's not afraid of going all out on them. This movie incorporates that and comes out ridiculous, relaxed and fun. It's just an easy watch and Pedro Pascal balances off Cage quite nicely. The plot faltered at times, but it's carried by the two main actors and the action scenes and Nick+Pedro driving a Porsche on acid more than makes up for all of that.

Though there's a feel of drag due to sketchy subplots, but the movie is a blast. It's such a caricature of itself, so metà-Cage and it certainly doesn't take itself seriously. And I the movie feels like an homage to movies in general, it was actually a joy to listen to phony film processes, which in turn aren't phony are they? Char dev is bad, generally. It's one of those feel good movies and it's genuinely fun. Sometimes it's the only thing your soul needs. Zevon for finish helps, too.

It's really quite enjoyable to see how this film plays with Nic Cage's public persona as an actor, Cage himself is at his wackiest, and Pedro Pascal matches Cage's goofiness dead-on to make for a quite enjoyable buddy film. The pacing's not great with the film jumping around a lot in tone, genre, and even narrative consistency but it's still a fun time. Of course, one's enjoyment of this film will likely rely on one's enjoyment of Nic Cage which I can understand turning some people off.

This is a pretty silly, far fetched yet very entertaining and daft action parody crime film. I don't think its especially memorable in a clever way but it sort of is in a 'its so random' sort of a way. Its definitely amusing and if you enjoy your action films, car chase scenes, explosions etc. then this is definitely one to watch. I suppose its pretty superficial but its certainly a fun film with plenty to distract and amuse, so I'd recommend it on that basis, yes.

A fun meta piece and done in a way that fits the Cage persona to a tee. A lot of older filmmakers and actors are making their “where do I fit in this new world and how do I appear to modern Hollywood” (hell Clint has been doing it on and off for 30 years at this point). Not a lot of them are just saying I’m playing myself. There’s no need to hide it in the subtext. Teeters on the ledge of being too clever. The Duplass Bros joke cracked exactly two people in the theatre up. Me, and my brother.

Not as uproariously funny as I had maybe hoped it would be, but there's a lot of snappy dialogue here and I'll never poo-poo Nic Cage, who I hear smooches good. There's probably precious little to say about this Nic Cage movie starring Nic Cage playing Nic Cage, where he spends 100 minutes being the best Nic Cage he can be - you either like Nic Cage or you don't, and that probably correlates 1:1 in terms of whether you like this movie or not. I do, so I do. Pedro Pascal is awesome in this too.

Kept thinking probably b/c I had seen in 2 days prior that this movie is related to everything everywhere in that they can only be made in this era of cinema. We’ve seen cage comebacks and seen him in referential mode or giving the fans what they want mode BUT we’ve never seen it like this. In full metaness without any subtext. Just pure Cage and the battle between who he is and has been. It is very in your face but I found him and pascal very charming. I’m a sucker for stupid film references

There are not many "thespians" who could send themselves up to this degree; Clooney, Di Caprio perhaps, and of course Cage .. most are far too precious or simply not "send uppable"! I cant see Kingsley or Hopkins doing it. This was a fun romp with some decent ideas, decent production values and some amazingly beautiful sets ... and well, I enjoyed it. If you think this is a Cage vanity project, then you are probably not going to enjoy it as much, but I thought it was just him sending himself up

A movie of this status is very rare in today’s market, and Nicolas Cage is one of the few guys to really pull it off. Between it’s sheer Cage entertainment, self awareness, and general fun upbeat vibe, it’s hard to not have a good time with this type of a movie. The Cage/Pascal dynamic is amazing and helps carry a pretty lethargic story arch. Unfortunately, this is one of those movies where that is secondary, but it doesn’t stop it from being a hell of a good time.

Top badass moment? That’s one way of solving the enduring riddle of who would play you in a movie about yourself. This film doesn’t quite work for me. The idea’s great and NC is great, but it gets lost for too long up inside its own fanboy posterior, whilst the 'bringing the family together again' elements are shallower than the water in the Vastitas Borealis; ultimately it’s just a crappy spy caper, not a genre I much care for. File under wasted opportunity. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Do you like Nick Cage and his myriad of characters he has played over the years? Would you like to see a movie that takes that Nick Cage (the actual human) and put a very decent plot and movie in his lap examining how his success and the chase to be as big as he once was is diluted with a trash spy plot and a big action scene at the end but may be okay because even the writing is aware that the movie would only get made if there was an action scene?! It does not quite become the film you think it will. In trying to do one extra thing it diminishes the comedy that was working.
