The idea was interesting, but it missed the mark at parts. It felt a bit cheap at times, for example when it made frog noises and growls and jumpscare attempts. I feel like the same movements but slower reveals could have worked better with the tension and such. One guy holds the whole things on his shoulders otherwise

This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The plot was a little bit out there and while I love the whole demons in horror -thing, the religious side felt a little bit too preachy for me, even just for being the theme. Otherwise, I really have a thing for the kind of horror creatures that do the jerky/twitchy -motion, so the creature was cool. I am also a big fan of JDM and his charisma did carry a lot of this movie.

A bit too preachy, a bit too reliant on jump scares, a bit too cheap looking (in a bad way) at times. I’ve seen worse though. Decent acting, some good scenes here and there.

Fell asleep for a bit. Feel like I got the gist of it though.

A pretty solid, under the radar horror movie. It's got some good actors, Elwes, Sadler, and Morgan are no chumps. The creature design is genuinely scary and the religious subversion and evil masquerading as good is always a touch that adds a little bit of depth to a horror movie. I was pleasantly surprised here, any die hard horror fan will probably have a decent time with this one.

This is my own fault for letting my expectations run amok based on a trailer. JDM does decent work as a scumbag reporter turned good, and there's at least a mostly-decent plot and premise here. But the parts that sucked also stuck out like sore thumbs at every turn: embarrassing visual effects married to cheap, unearned jump scares. "Baby's first green screen" levels of bad, with horribly-fake lighting effects, merging to create a big pile of "meh". Don't forget the lame sequel setup at the end!

A astonishingly dull movie bookended by a a good opening and a pretty fun ending but just a waste

It's best selling point is Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and fortunately he does really well here. Unfortunately, this isn't great. With it's horrible affects and PG-13 rating really holding this back from genuine scares. It's 3rd act is also incredibly abrupt and underwhelming. It's saving grace is the surprisingly decent screenwriting and strong character arch of JDM's character. This is underwhelming, but definitely not the worst I've ever seen. This has solid elements, but lacks scares.

Did I just accidentally watch a Catholic propaganda film?

Imagine how great this could've been if actually directed instead of just produced by Raimi. The material itself is not bad -- the possible deception behind alleged miracles, false prophets, old demons lying in rotten trees --, it just didn't have the ideal treatment -- although JDM is really cool. One second of Black Sunday is better than this whole thing.

Great cast, great idea for a story. Everything else falls apart.

From behind every idolatry there is a demon. Only God saves! There is only one mediator between God and men: Jesus Christ (1 Tm 2:5).

I like Morgan and he did well with the material here. Didn't hate this like many reviewers did, it was adequate for the genre and had some good moments. Parts were very predictable but that's typical for these types of flicks. would have been nice for it to elevate higher, but it's much better than the 2-3s it's getting. 5.7.

The Unholy is a missed opportunity. First, they should have paid a little more attention to Mary's past story. Because the events that took place in the 19th century should not have been passed on by just telling, they should have been shown with scenes. Secondly, cheap visual effects were unnecessary, they should have used makeup. Third, the script could have been written smarter and this movie should have been Rated-R.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is great in anything he shows up in, and that's great, but THE UNHOLY is incredibly bland and paint-by-the-numbers horror with countless cheap jump scares and characters you don't really care about

Weak sauce but the religious elements are rather interesting and Dean Morgan is fine.
