Broadway star Valerie Stanton, breaking up with her producer-lover Gordon Dunning, unintentionally kills him. In flashback, she recalls meeting new flame Michael Morrell, and Dunning's machinations leading to the fatal argument. The next day, it appears that Valerie's former rival Marian Webster is the prime suspect. Or is suave police Captain Danbury just playing cat and mouse with her? Nicely catty dialogue. (imdb)

Not much of a thriller, but a decent enough character study about guilt and ambition. It gets off to a great start with a fantastically noirish opening sequence, but loses a lot of momentum in the middle thanks to an interminable flashback that lasts almost half an hour. Overall, it's not bad.

Watchable melodrama from the 1940's, looks dated now, nothing particularly memorable in terms of plot and direction.

While I prefer to see Rosalind Russell in comedies, it was a nice change to see her in more of a suspenseful thriller after killing a guy. And It holds the tension steady, almost too steady, as I wouldn't have minded some stronger peaks in the emotional manipulation of The Velvet Touch (1948), but this was a good one for her.
