Mr. Grodman was a respected superintendent at Scotland Yard until a mistake in an investigation caused the execution of an innocent man. He takes the blame and is dismissed, replaced by the obnoxious, gloating Buckley. Feeling vengeful, Grodman would like nothing more than to see Buckley look foolish on the job. His friend Victor Emmric, an artist with macabre tastes, wouldn't mind either and soon a mysterious murder occurs that may provide them with the chance. (imdb)

Lots of interesting characters and a "locked room" murder made this a quite enjoyable mystery that kept me guessing! The actors are all great and I love the foggy London setting.

I like when my noirs veer onto the mystery side, and this is a splendid one. Greenstreet, in particular, and Lorre are very enjoyable to watch, both investigation scenes and when just discussing events. The mystery is pretty fun too, though it's not given as much time to shine as it could. The only real problem with the film is it lacks the energy of the best noirs, mostly because the rest of the cast is good but never brings in anything special.

A surprisingly effective little mystery featuring Greenstreet and Lorre. Young Siegel seizes the moment and makes the most of his directorial opportunities.

A treat! Witty and sharp murder mystery with good performances from Greenstreet and Lorre.

This is very much a B movie, with a debuting director (Siegel, who went on to great things) and fun but normally supporting players in the lead roles in Greenstreet and Lorre. It's a noir whodunit that doesn't quite hold up to closer scrutiny (at least solution wise), but is an enjoyable time with some good flair from Siegel sporadically. The cast is fun and it makes the most out of what it has. Minor, but good stuff.

The last one where they teamed Sydney Greenstreet up with Peter Lorre, and what a excellent way to finish off a quality series of noir collaborations! Perfectly sums up why their quirky dark personas mash so well in mysterious cases like this.
