History
The Vicar of Bray is a satirical description of an individual fundamentally changing his principles to remain in ecclesiastical office as external requirements change around him. The religious upheavals in England from 1533 to 1559 and from 1633 to 1715 made it almost impossible for any individual to comply with the successive religious requirements of the state.

Endearing comedy is as insubstantial as fairy floss, but is very entertaining, mostly thanks to Holloway's wonderful performance as the long-haired Vicar; some beautiful, hummable songs on the soundtrack as well.

A simple movie which plays more like a vintage TV performance then a film set for the big screen. Stanley Holloway plays the lead as the vicar who survives many kings with his changing philosophy. All in a very jolly mood without really being funny. Or memorable.
