Way too enamored of its own emo preciousness. James Woods and Kathleen Turner are pretty good, and there are some nice sets and photography but mostly this movie makes me impatient and angry.

As a film, it's quite good. As a film-making debut? Stunning. Coppola adapted the book and directs her own script with such a sure sense of tone, style and message that you almost forget how terrible she was in The Godfather: Part III. Giovanni Ribisi's narration is excellent, and very distinct. It's a seemingly small detail, but as a book adaptation, it's pivotal. Elsewhere, Woods shines as a man completely dominated by his over-bearing wife, and Dunst -- well, she's a stone fox.

As a kid, I distinctly remember renting this and wondering having no idea what it was that I just watched. This is every white girl in her thirties' favourite childhood film, much like how every white dude's is Fight Club.

Whilst Sofia Coppola never manages to conjure up an interesting message, the movie captures enough of that magical teen-sexuality to warrant a view. Woods has a great, small role as the absent-minded father, but it's really the girl's show. Dunst was never cuter, and even though many questions in the film remain agonizingly unanswered, you'll have no problem understanding the attraction between the young characters. Also great voice-over by Ribisi.

Interesting effort by Sofia Coppola but it feels a tad shallow and melodramatic. There is a lot of interesting light surreal imagery here and there which builds up the atmosphere in the film nicely. The performances are all adequate but nothing to call home about.

A macabre Lynchian take of the suburbs married to Malick's etherial sensuality, as told from the perspective of the kid from The Wonder Years. And yet not quite as interesting as all that sounds.

For the girls themselves, all the smothering expectations make any sort of self determination and personal identity nigh impossible. The intentional obscuring of development means there aren't any obvious answers for "What was the point?" The film smartly shies away from 140 character slogans about teenage suicide and repressive parenting. Instead, it paints an abstract portrait that leaves the viewers grasping, like the teenage boys, for some sort of intelligibility of the unintelligible.

God... this is just... the most terribly depressing movie ever. I didn't even cry I just... started dry heaving. There's a difference between touchingly sad but teaches a moral, and... "Here's just a bunch of horrible things that there doesn't seem to have been any way to prevent."

Beautifully shot and the soundtrack by "Air" is great and creates a subtle melancholy. That said, the feeling of ennui that Sofia seeks to show just feels awkward here, the performances aren't always convincing and the film is clunkily overstylised.

I HATED this movie. Absolutely, positively loathed it on many levels. I kept waiting for the part where the story picks up... that part never came. Yes, events transpired. Even events that should have evoked horror, amusement or empathy. But instead, I watched this entire movie with no feeling of connection or involvement with any of the characters. When I see a really, really terrible movie, I now say to myself, "Well, that really sucked, but not as bad as the Virgin Suicides."

The good: wonderful cinematography, Kirsten Dunst is excellent in this and she is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, the soundtrack and tone are also very good. The bad: pacing is a little off, the writing is very meh, could've been much better, and the whole blame the crazy religious parents thing has been beaten to death by now. The ugly: James Woods.

The beautiful cinematography and wonderful soundtrack works well to create a dreamy atmosphere of romantisized teenage recollections. The gloomy and nostalgic feeling really captivated me. It did have some flaws, though. Especially, the whole premise that boys don't understand girls sometimes seemed to be used as a bad excuse for skipping essential character motivation. The girls' behaviour didn't make much sense, and yes, I know that was the point but it still seemed a bit cheap sometimes.

Strange. There is a biting and sarcastic sense of humor, but by the end the tragedy is so overwhelming it can hardly be called a black comedy. Coppola infuses her teenage melodrama with appropriate levels of play and nostalgia, without giving in to "best years of our lives" cliches.

Another film about teenaged coming of age and suburban mundanity, but due to focus shifting between characters, some of whom are ill-defined, it comes off as thematically muddled. The stylistic quirks that are used only once or twice make it seem stylistically muddled as well, tarnishing its strong melancholy atmosphere. First time filmmaker mistakes, basically. The acting is never really bad, but never really compelling, either.

An incredibly powerful film to watch. Speaks to me in a certain way as growing up I also was enraptured by girls I didn't know much about, trying to piece together pieces of their lives from clues left behind or plundered. Coppola does a fantastic job capturing the flavor of the novel and translating it beautifully on film.

The brightest and darkest movie at the same time. It has the appearance of a light-hearted coming-of-age story, but in its heart it's dark, telling us about repressing people, confining them, the need for making our own choices even if some will end up as mistakes, the kind of loves that can be suffocating or on the opposite, almost fictional.

I think the reason I don't enjoy this film as much as I should is the lack of focus on the protagonist. Too many characters in such a short time There's no time to go in-depth for each character, thus I can't really be immersed to. For the same reason I prefer moonrise kingdom over Tenenbaum, I would rather focus on the two main protagonists than just having little screen time for multiple character.

An odd mix of elements some of which work beautifully while others grate. The major problem lies in the portrayal of the parents and specifically the mother as catalyst for what follows, coming across as contrived and thus difficult to accept as given. On the other hand, something about the portrayal of the youthful characters grips the viewer and the cinematography and especially the use of music are excellent. The climactic moment did not seem well-handled, lacking the power of earlier scenes.

Coppola's strongest skill as a filmmaker is the ability to create an atmosphere, and I'm always a sucker for it. This is a haunting film that I suspect will stay with me for some time. The atmosphere reminded me a bit of Picnic at Hanging Rock. There are so many moments that feel exactly correct, either insofar as kids interactions or small decisions. As is usually the case with Coppola, she lets you think for yourself, not forcefeeding you anything or overtly judging her characters.

The Virgin Suicides feels effortless. I just love this movie stylistically. The production design, cinematography, and soundtrack/score really worked for me in a major way. The casting is also great. Sofia Coppola completely nailed the vibe of this movie. However, the thing that stops me from absolutely loving it is that I simply want more of it. The film has a slow but nice and gradual pace like a small creek flowing thru a mountain town. Kirsten Dunst plays an angelic character that doesn't act like an angel but appears as one, probably her most beautiful moment in this film.
